  • Could Mark Sanchez eventually unseat Nick Foles as Eagles QB?

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports18 hrs ago

The Eagles' signing of Mark Sanchez was barely a blip on the Philly fanbase's offseason radar. After all, Nick Foles had just completed one of the most extraordinarily efficient passing seasons in NFL history, presumably securing himself a job under center in Philadelphia for the foreseeable future. Sanchez would come into town, complete the Eagles' triumvirate of Pac-12 quarterbacks and push Matt Barkley for Foles' backup gig.

Fast forward five months, and the former Jets first-rounder is lighting it up in the preseason and gradually prompting whispers in Philadelphia about a QB controversy. Over the team's first three preseason games, Sanchez has completed 25 of 31 passes for 281 yards and two touchdowns to one interception. Though Foles will undoubtedly start the season as the quarterback of the Eagles' high-octane offense, Sanchez's preseason production could be lessening the amount of slack in coach Chip Kelly's leash on his starter.

  • Michael Vick says 'there is no patience' with Geno Smith's inconsistency

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports18 hrs ago

When Michael Vick signed with the Jets, the whispers began about a competition between he and second-year quarterback Geno Smith for New York's starting job under center. At the time, Vick was candid when he told the media that the gig was definitively Smith's. According to the four-time Pro-Bowler, his job at Jets camp would be to push the young signal-caller and give the team a viable backup option in the event of an injury -- or disappointing production from Smith.

Now, Vick is continuing to speak honestly to the media about the Jets' quarterback situation, saying that "there is really no patience" with underwhelming quarterback play. After all, plenty of other young quarterbacks have succeeded early in their career.

"There wasn't patience with me," Vick said of his time as a starter in Atlanta during his early twenties. "There wasn't patience with Brett Favre. I've seen Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco go in there as rookies. Ben Roethlisberger. They had to get it done, and they got it done."

  • FedEx Cup: Van Pelt leads Barclays after Day 1, McIlroy stumbles

Rory McIlroy took a week to celebrate his blockbuster summer and paid for it in The Barclays with his worst start in two months.

He could afford a day off.

That wasn't the case for players like Bo Van Pelt and Paul Casey, and they picked a good time to produce good scores.

With no guarantee of playing beyond this week, Van Pelt opened with three straight birdies Thursday and chipped in for eagle late in his round for a 6-under 65 that gave him a one-shot lead in the opener of the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Van Pelt is No. 104 in the FedEx Cup. Only the top 100 advance to the next tournament.

  • Nationals up winning streak to 10 games with another walk-off

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports21 hrs ago

It has become an almost nightly occurrence for the Nationals to find themselves tied late in a game, whether it be the bottom of the ninth or in extra innings. Night after night after night, the Nationals have been put in position to have one pitch decide the outcome of an entire day.

On Thursday the Nats were locked in a scoreless tie with the Arizona Diamondbacks in the bottom of the ninth. Another chance for a walk-off after four in the previous five days. Déjà vu once again.

Denard Span came up second in the inning and as he's done all year - but especially in recent weeks - he got the Nationals started with a one-out single. Then he stole second, his 27th steal of the season which established a new career-high.

"I really don’t have the correct or the right words to say what the feeling is," he said. "Other than saying that we just feel confident, that somehow, someway, we’re going to inch [out] a victory."

The next batter, Anthony Rendon, then put a ball in play to third baseman Jordan Pacheco. It was a tough angle for Pacheco and Rendon could tell off the bat.

Check out Bulls rookie forward Doug McDermott sing the 7th-inning stretch at the Cubs-Giants game on Thursday. His performance at the microphone was equivalent to a 3-for-10 night from behind the three-point line. Not too great, but no major screw-ups either. The 2014 National Player of the Year nailed all the lyrics, but left something to be desired in the pitch and tone departments.

  • Robert Griffin III calls out his 'doubters' on Twitter

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports22 hrs ago

A couple of days after taking some heat for bad sliding technique and taking some gambles with his running style on Monday night against the Browns, Robert Griffin III put out a tweet that got some attention.

They doubted in High School They doubted a turnaround at @Baylor They doubted a Heisman was possible Keep doubting. It's nothing New.

Reporters asked Griffin about the tweet at Redskins Park today. He didn’t have much to add to it.

“You can say what you want in that regard but as far as I’m concerned I said what I needed to say,” he said. “There’s no need to look into it. It’s right there. It’s on Facebook, it’s on Instagram, it’s on Twitter. It is what I believe and what our household deems necessary to go out every day and be successful.”

Griffin said that he would continue to participate on social media.

“It is what it is,” he said. “We spend a lot of our day focused on football so when we get a chance to unwind whether it’s watching reality TV or being on Twitter for five minutes in the day it’s not subtracting from what we do on the field or in the film room.”
