  • 'Home of Golf' St. Andrews votes to allow female members

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports4 hrs ago

The “Home of Golf” will now welcome women.

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, which has a global membership of roughly 2,400, “voted overwhelmingly” Thursday to allow female members for the first time in its 260-year history.

A simple majority vote was required, but club secretary Peter Dawson announced that 85 percent voted in favor of admitting female members, effective immediately.

“This is a very important and positive day in the history of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club,” Dawson said, before adding: “I think it’s a very positive message for the game of golf. The R&A, in its position as a governing body for the game, I think it’s quite right that the members have agreed to embrace this concept and welcome women members to the club.”

On the same day that Scotland voted on whether to become independent, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club trumpeted its own historic decision – one that seemed inevitable once news of the vote was made public months ago.

  • Mad Dash: Former PGA star may earn $10 million to never play again

Max Thompson at NBC on Yahoo Sports8 hrs ago

Here's a question few will ever have to ponder: Would you rather chase your passion, or hang it up for an exorbitant amount of money? A recent report on Golf.com seems to suggest that former PGA star Anthony Kim is opting for the latter. Derailed by a brutal string of injuries in 2012, Kim disappeared from the pro ranks to heal and rehab, but two years later, has yet to return to the course. The reason may be a lucrative one. A friend close to Kim speculates that an insurance policy the golfer took out in case injury ended his career is worth at least $10 million, and possibly escalating closer to $20 million. If he takes another swing on the tour, that money is gone. More details here, but that's one tough call.

Adam Scott and caddie Steve Williams announced Wednesday that they have ended their partnership.

Scott and Williams had worked together since summer 2011, but Williams, 50, said at the start of this season that he hoped to scale back his tournament schedule and spend more time with family in New Zealand.

“After discussing this in detail with Adam it became evident that my plan was not going to fit with Adam’s requirements so we decided to end our partnership,” Williams said.

With Williams on the bag, Scott won his first career major at the 2013 Masters, ascended to No. 1 in the world this past May and developed into one of the most consistent players on any tour, finishing outside the top 25 only once this calendar year.
