Their bond goes far beyond their designation as teammates, and as a whole they are far more than merely a quartet of players thrown together to represent Spain.

The foursome that won the inaugural International Crown on Sunday have been friends on and off the golf course for years, which goes a long way toward explaining why Spain played so well as the fifth seed against many of the finest women golfers in the world.

Carlota Ciganda breezed to an early victory to set the tone, and Spain won all four of its singles matches in the final round to win the coveted trophy.

  • David Ortiz on showboating HRs: 'It's pretty much what I do'

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports22 hrs ago

    It wouldn't be a Red Sox-Rays series without a little ill-will.

The two teams have a history of on-field brawls and off-field verbal exchanges, both of which came to a head earlier this season when David Price hit David Ortiz, in apparent retaliation for Ortiz's excessive admiration of a home run hit last October.

Several hit batsmen and a suspension later, it continued.

This weekend, there was a big buildup for an Ortiz-Price rematch, but little took place when the two squared off Friday.

On Sunday, however, Ortiz raised the Rays' ire when he flipped his bat after hitting a three-run bomb to right field in the third inning.

"I don't know what makes him think he can showboat like that,'' fumed Chris Archer, who gave up the shot.

    Ortiz dismissed Archer's comments.

"That's pretty much what I do,'' shrugged Ortiz. "Tie game, you put the team ahead, you enjoy it.''

Ortiz went on to both praise Archer, noting: "He's a good pitcher. He's got great stuff. He's a guy that I think is going to be pretty good."

  • Meriweather, fan interrupt Clark's press conference for autograph turned tattoo

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports22 hrs ago

Ryan Clark started off his press conference on Sunday morning joking about how he's done too much media and wondered why people still wanted to hear him talk. So, Brandon Meriweather interrupted his press conference to agree.

"We need you to stop being such a media guy, and start being Ryan Clark the football player," Meriweather said.

To get his point across, Meriweather joked that a fan wanted to get his name tattooed after already having a few others, but would settle for an autograph.

Clark made it clear that it wasn't special though if he already other players names tattooed on him.

"Imagine if I had like six tattoos of women's names on me, and then asked my wife once we got married if I could her name," Clark said going down an interesting path, "Is that going to be special to her? No."

Brandon Meriweather wouldn't settle for that.

  • LeSean McCoy gets into scuffle with Trent Cole at Eagles camp

NBC Sports at NBC on Yahoo Sports22 hrs ago

    Skirmish? What skirmish?

“I don’t even know what you’re talking about,” Trent Cole said Sunday, about two hours after an entanglement between he and LeSean McCoy in 7-on-7 drills kicked up a pile of humanity that swirled like a cyclone along the left sideline at the NovaCare Complex.

An irate McCoy emerged from the funnel of Eagles, still jawing at a gone-bonkers Cole. On a hot and steamy day, tempers flared early, injecting some extra juice on Day 2 of Eagles training camp.

“That’s my brother, man,” Cole said dismissively. “We were just playing around. We’re competitors. We’re very competitive.”

McCoy, not known for hiding his feelings, shrugged off the incident.

"The whole camp so far, it’s been touching a little too much,” he said. “I’m trying to let them know, it’s OK if you can’t cover me.”

But the short fracas could portend the tone of camp Monday, the first open practice at Lincoln Financial Field and the first for Eagles in pads. So far, through two days of camp, they’ve practiced in shorts and shells.

  • Adam Wainwright rebounds, shuts down Cubs to win 13th

Adam Wainwright pitched seven scoreless innings and Matt Holliday hit a solo homer to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 1-0 victory and a series win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

The Cardinals won two of the three games at Wrigley Field in the weekend set. The Cubs have not won a home series since taking two of three from the Miami Marlins June 6-8.

Wainwright (13-5) allowed five hits and walked three during his seven innings. It was a far cry from his previous outing when he allowed six runs (four earned) in 4 2/3 innings against the Tampa Bay Rays last Tuesday.

Kevin Siegrist worked the eighth and Trevor Rosenthal pitched the ninth for his 32nd save in 36 chances.

Cubs rookie Kyle Hendricks (1-1) allowed just one run on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.

With the wind blowing out to right field, the conditions seemed ideal for a classic Wrigley slugfest -- a feeling seemingly confirmed when Holliday, the third batter of the game, lifted a drive to center field that landed in the batter's eye for a solo homer and a 1-0 Cardinals lead.

But that's where the score stayed as the starters took control.
