On one hand, I really feel uncomfortable aping the recorded work of Marvin Gaye, an absolute giant of the American arts, to sell tickets for a basketball team hoping to make the second round of the playoffs in 2012 for the first time in a dozen years.
On the other hand, the New York Knicks did a pretty spectacular job with this advertisement:
(And when the tag line underneath the YouTube clip, written by the Knicks, says "you've waited long enough," I believe 'em. Not just because we've waited long enough, but because Knicks owner James Dolan wanted to start playing games at Madison Square Garden as soon as they swept the sawdust off of that refurbished floor.)
Less affecting but no less creepy is TNT's promo featuring several Shaquille O'Neals singing the Temptations hit "Get Ready." Sometimes with sunglasses:
Not as big a winner as the Knicks ad, to these eyes, but we're all more than ready for Shaq's debut on TNT this year, especially after his great-as-expected turn on NBA TV earlier this fall.
