Video: Monta Ellis hits a very tough game-winner

The concept of an All-Star snub is a tough one to pin down, if only because most obvious choices get selected for the game and the last reserves chosen and left off are often largely interchangeable. That's not to say that the "snubs" wouldn't have deserved their selections, just that it's hard to feel especially strongly either way when the margins between players are relatively narrow.

Golden State Warriors scorer Monta Ellis is one of this year's snubs, just as he was last year. And while it's not terribly shocking that he didn't make the West team — he scores a lot, but at a relatively low shooting percentage — especially with fellow snubbed guards like Ty Lawson and Kyle Lowry standing as more logical choices. Nevertheless, he's exciting and makes plays all the time that convince certain people that he might belong in the Mid-Winter Classic some time in the future.

He made one of those plays on Wednesday night: an off-balance, tricky fadeaway jumper over a stellar defender in the Phoenix Suns' Grant Hill. Coming with one second left in regulation, it broke a tie to give the Warriors a 106-104 road win. It was especially notable for Ellis because he had missed several end-of-game, isolation jumpers earlier in the season that would have given the Warriors key wins. This shot won't undue those misses, but that's not reason to turn it down.

The Warriors enter the All-Star break with just a 13-17 record, good enough for 12th in the West. Given the way coaches make selections in this era, that's not good enough to make their best player an All-Star. But maybe that doesn't matter so much. When Monta hits shots like this one, he makes the case that a guy doesn't have to play in the All-Star game to look like a star.

He seems to me to be right about where he should be shooting. He shoots 43.3% this year. He usually shoots a higher percent. But even when he does he still doesn't make the team. Last year he shot 45.1%. He is a career 46.6% shooting SG. That is pretty high. He gets more assists than Westbrook and Kobe, deespite less talent around him. Shoots the 3 better than both too. Also has less TOs. The ONLY TOP 10 scorer in the NBA not in the ALL STAR game. Same as last year. Also shoots better than Paul Pierce. They have a better record than the Suns and Nash is an ALL STAR. Love has never started for a winning team. Monta has done that-twice.

the Warriors aren't a winning team. and Love's numbers are ridiculous, and the Wolves are .500 still better than the Celtics. Should have made it over Nash though.

Iverson like. Lowry IS better and under rated. Deron Williams IS an All Star, record matters but he is too good, Top 5 PG.

Monta Ellis is clutch, I don't care what none of ya'll say. That was Grant Hill guarding him and where he lacks in physical(age) he makes up for it in mental(b-ball IQ off the charts). He knew the spin fade was coming and couldn't stop it. Sweet ball release by Ellis and sweet win in high fashion.

"especially with fellow snubbed guards like Ty Lawson and Kyle Lowry standing as more logical choices."

Proof that this Eric Freeman numbnuts character isn't actually familiar with the game of professional basketball. Lawson and Lowry, in addition to scoring significantly less than Ellis and playing a different position than Ellis (Ellis is really a SG), are not relied upon almost exclusively by their respective teams to take those hard to make shots at the end of the shot clock - like Ellis is. Ellis has way more scoring responsibility for his team and draws way more defensive attention than Lawson and Lowry. This is a ridiculous comment.

Agreed. Monta outplayed both this year. And against Denver he had a bad game it was just that Lawson's was worse. He buried Lowry. Wasn't even close. Plus Monta has done it for years now while Lawson and Lowry have just gotten into the picture this season. Curry is probably better than those two. Except when he is hurt. Which is kind of often lately.

Why are you complimenting him? This is why he misses alot of those game ending shots, specifically because they are terrible, low-percentage jump shots, which is exactly like the rest of his suspect shot selection. Stop complimenting him for making a garbage shot, it only encourages him to shoot more terrible shots like that, which he will then go to brick more often than not. The guy is a 38% shooter outside of 3 feet of the rim for crying out loud.

he plays for the Warriors. Who else is going to take the game winner? Biedrins? David Lee? That's the shooting guards job. Curry would be the only one but he was injured.
