Video: Kobe passes Michael Jordan to top all-time All-Star scoring in narrow West win

Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant has played in 14 All-Star games in his career, enough to put him at third place (in a tie) on the all-time list behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and former teammate Shaquille O'Neal. As one of the best scorers in NBA history, he's had his fair share of big All-Star game performances, too, winning four MVPs.

So, during Sunday night's contest, Bryant reached a milestone that before the game seemed like a foregone conclusion. With five minutes remaining in the third quarter, Kobe took a pass on a fast break and finished with an easy two-hand slam, putting him past Michael Jordan on the all-time All-Star game scoring list with 263 points. In at least one aspect, Kobe has overtaken the player on whom he seems to have modeled his entire career.

It was a deserved honor, and yet one that was almost overshadowed by a late mistake. With 18 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Bryant split a pair of free throws to give the East a chance to win the game with a 3-pointer. They couldn't execute, though, with Deron Williams missing an open 3-pointer and LeBron James throwing an errant pass after an offensive rebound. They had a desperation attempt with a second left to send the game to overtime, as well, but Dwyane Wade couldn't make the off-balance 3-pointer to give the West a 152-149 victory.

As that final score suggests, it was an entertaining game, with seven players scoring 20 or more points, a comeback from the East after the West had controlled most of the game, and the usual mix of exciting dunks and lighthearted goofing-off. While the entire weekend might be seen as a disappointment, especially considering Saturday's lackluster dunk contest, the All-Star game itself served as a quality ending.

hey heyhey!! kobe did passed mj's scoring in all star but both player have 14th years in pro and kobe of course still play for at least 5 more year.. but when you see the total top scoring in NBA history kobe still in 6th place or 5th don't care, but same 14th year and when mj retired he lanked #3. if he played more or there were no gap in his era he should be #1 for all time. no one can break. even during the 14th year he didn't play almost 70 games by injured. supporting cast?!! kobe had a shaq for 5years.. now gasol.. he didn't play basketball, he owns the basketball so as nba

MJ had a Better supporting cast during his playing days than Kobe. OK all you Kobe haters bring it on....
      • KP 2 months ago
Kobe played with the most dominate player in the league, Shaq say what you want, Shaq was the player getting double teamed...not kobe. On other note, lets talk about Kobe's team...Gasol, Bynum, Artest, Odom, and Fisher are a very good core ( Not to say Gasol and Bynum were the reason Kobe won the second ring). Jordan first 3 championships he had Pippen, Grant Cartwright, Paxson and himself...hmmmm

There's no one way to measure the greatest of all-time so rather than waste my time arguing about it, I am just going to enjoy watching Kobe finish off the last few years of his career. MJ may be "untouchable" but Kobe definitely put himself close, in my opinion. Great show from both sides this All-Star game.
      • KP 2 months ago
Kobe won 5 champions and 3 of them being the second option...Jordan won 6 rings being the main option, that's the big difference in my opinion. Then you look at other things and I just don't see Kobe being better then Jordan in many categories.
      • Mark H 2 months ago
Completely agree, KP. NBA Finals MVP awards are the true measure of a great player. Shaq has 3, Kobe only has 2. Jordan has 6. Talk to me when Kobe has 6.
      • Dr. Juicy 2 months ago
here we go again with the "But he did this and he did that" comparison. KP, save yourself the arguments already...

If you want to go there, how about Jordan didn't win any rings until he was almost 30? Jordan probably had the greatest NBA Roster on his team in NBA history. Scottie Pippen would love to have a word with you. Actually, Jordan's playoff record without Scottie Pippen is only 1-9

When he retired, everyone predicted disaster for Chicago. How could they possibly expect to win without Jordan? Yet, the Bulls only dropped two games in the win column, going from 57-25 in Jordan's last year to 55-27 without him.

Am I saying Jordan isn't the greatest ever? H**l no!! But am I saying he had an incredible roster that sure helped him win those 6 rings? You bet.

Really Dee Brown!!!! You missed probably the second best player from that time period. The mans name was Clyde "The Glide" Drexler.

I REALLY miss the 80's/90's...the greatest era of players ever...

Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy, A.C. Green, Larry Bird,
Dee Brown, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, Reggie Lewis,
Julius Erving (...yes,he still played in the early 80's) Charles Barkley,
Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, Dennis Rodman, Reggie Miller, Hakeem Olajowan,
      John Stockton, Karl Malone...

Chris Mullen,Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond, Patrick Ewing, John Starks,
Dominque Wilkins, Spudd Webb (he won the slam dunk, and he was only 5'7"!)
Doc Rivers, Shawn Kemp, Gary Payton, Nate Mcmillan, David Robinson,
Mark Price, Brad Daughtery, Craig Ehlo, Lary Nance, Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning,
Mugsy Bouges, Glen Rice, Nick Anderson, Shaquille O'Neal, Penny Hardaway,
Tom Chambers, Kevin Johnson, Dan Majerle, Damon Stoudamire, Cedric Ceballos,

...and oh yeah - some guy named Michael Jordan?

(I could sit here all night typing the all the rosters in those decades, and the
players who made those teams, and the league so great)

TODAYS PLAYERS GOT NOTHIN' ON THE OLD SCHOOL!!!!!

All you Jordan fans...."Kobe is good but he will never be Jordan"

Kobe is Kobe....he is his own player.....quit defending Jordan and trashing Kobe just because he passed him in something....We know MJ is better ...but you don't have to trash Kobe and the era he plays in.

I kinda wish all sports would just die in america and just have 3 football leagues going year round. Sports that play 100 games and score every couple seconds are not that exciting. Baseball just be banned. The most boring sport in the world. I rate baseball up there with womens bowling.
    • KC  •  Tampa, Florida  •  2 months ago
And he did it while traveling. Which should be a penalty but props to him, He's right up there with Magic Johnson now.

Wow. All the people getting mad because they didn't play defense are extremely ignorant. This isn't a game to win. It's a game for the fans to see their favorite NBA stars show themselves. Plus, they're going to play hard defense so they can get hurt in a game that doesn't matter? Really? Come on. Let's use a LITTLE common sense...please.
      • Ray 2 months ago
No it's supposed to be a game where we see the best players in the NBA compete with each other to see which conference has the better players. It's a all-star GAME. If these players wanted to show off their dunk skills, they should have done the dunk competition. Last night was a disgrace to the sport. At one point, it was so ridiculous, there were about 5 dunks in under a minute of real time. These players do get paid bonuses to perform in this game. Just get rid of it just like the Pro Bowl should be rid of.
      • joseph d 2 months ago
Whatever happened to the competitive spirit, it's still a competitive game, not a Harlem globetrotters type show..

Best player of all time and I see it as a tie with Magic Johnson. They were both Amazing and did things their own way.

i don't think so Kobe passes Michael Jordan to top all-time All-Star scoring, because Michael Jordan didn't play 1994 - 1995 season. and also in NBA All Star.
    • Winner09  •  Nashville, Tennessee  •  2 months ago
Why did Kevin Durant get mvp? I think it should have went to K. Bryant!! Let me guess it goes to who wins the game and scores the most points. Come on he beat M.J's record in this game.
