Video: JaVale McGee with the nice dunk, and team-wide embarrassment

This year's version of the Washington Wizards is terrible. Not only have they slung their way toward the bottom of the NBA's pool, but the team also appears to be on pace for an NBA-worst won/loss percentage. Worse than even that (a historically bad record only guarantees a 25 percent chance at the top overall pick in the NBA draft), this squad has long been regarded by observers both strident and fanciful as the absolute dumbest team they've ever seen.

Monday's showing topped all that off. We'll let the Yahoo! Sports Minute take it from here:

Tossing down an alley-oop to yourself with nearly 22 minutes to go? It's not nearly as embarrassing as the nonsense he attempted 10 months ago while shooting for a needless triple-double.

It's JaVale McGee, though. And it's Washington. Long-term context counts, and I can understand if this was Wizards' coach Flip Saunders' last straw. The Washington coach certainly acted as if it was, and considering what this man has had to work through in D.C.? We can't blame him for benching McGee after a failed pick-and-roll rotation 90 seconds into the first quarter. Much less a needless alley-oop performed with his team trying to come back.

No wonder Michael Yang left Yahoo for good.....He read this story!
Dwyer......take a long walk off a short pier bro! You suck!

Kelly Dwyer (author of this article) and Flip Saunders should both be looking for new jobs. This is one of the worst articles I've ever read. It's completely inaccurate. The Wizards were down by six points at the time of the dunk. Where he got the number 14 from is beyond me. If you were talented like McGee, playing for a horrible team like the Wizards, it's no wonder he's trying to have a little fun out there somehow. At least he didn't miss.
      • Jason 4 months ago
The point is, he could have missed. McGee should care more about putting his energy into winning games instead of trying to "wow" the crowd. It was a selfish move and only had himself in mind when doing it. I am certain the Wizard's fans would take a few more wins over a flashy dunk any day.
      • kev 4 months ago
Exactly Jason. He is playing in the big leagues making big bucks. This is not the Goodman league. And by he way, after that stupid dunk, the Rockets went on a run and that the fat lady began to tune up.

When your a fan of the Washington Wizards and you go to a game if you cant see a win you want to see something amazing and that was amazing. Fans to be entertained something to say yeah we lost but that dunk sure was nice. Flip Saunders takes all the fun out games. Why do you think Pistons players stopped playing hard for him leading to his firing? They did just enough to make it to the East Finals but thats it.
      • EAD 4 months ago
The Wizards should concern themselves with something amazing, like winning.

      • RI 4 months ago
OK dummy. So you want to compare their record in a 66 game season to the normal 82 game season.
      • Anduuuuu 4 months ago
He's talking about the grammar, idiot.

Kelly Dwyer, if your coach is 26-56, 23-59, and 1-12, his substance is LOSING.

I have been a Wizard fan for 40 years. Flip Saunders jumps all over McGee and has NEVER made an example of Andray Blatche for his on the court miscues. McGee converted the dunk. Saunders got mad, called a timeout. Inserted Blatche and Crawford and the Wizards took three point shots that were shots, they committed technical fouls which unlike McGee's dunk, put the Wizards farther behind.

Since Flip Saunders became coach the young Wizards have been called dumb by the media. I want you to know that this particular fan believes that dunk was EASY and low risk by McGee. It got some of the crowd excited. It was not worth bench a guy or giving him bad press.

Only a rotten coach like Saunders blames his players for every little thing. If Saunders put McGee back in when the Wizards got to 98-103, at the very least his player doesn't have to be outed by a coach that does one thing well: Flip Saunders throws players under the bus so media like you can assassinate their character.

Write your story and put every dumb expression on McGee's face that you can. The truth is McGee has improved this season. Flip Saunders has NOT.

three point shots that were BAD shots

Flip goes off about dumb stuff but tolerates shot jacking and poor rotations by guards and Andray Blatche.

This story makes me more angry than being a fan of a poorly coached team!
      • ...but it doesn't tel ... 4 months ago
McGee is still nothing more than a stat stuffer, I have yet to see anything that says otherwise. It's sad because he's very talented. It's the attitude of the players that's holding this team back right now. Phil Jackson or Red couldn't coach this team into the playoffs with their attitudes.
      • Jeff 4 months ago
Phil Jackson worked great with bad attitudes, just look at the egos he had with Jordan, Pippen, and Rodman, and then Kobe and Shaq. Trying to compare the two coaches would be an insult. And McGee is a third year athletic center and MOST teams would love to have. I know a defensive coach like Thibodeu would love to have a blocker like McGee that also gets a double double in points and rebounds.

In Yahoo writer land, you must be terrible at simple addition. It's a requirement.
    • Albert  •  Washington, District of Columbia  •  4 months ago
Um, he actually cut the Rockets lead to 4 (64-60). It was a dunk that HARDLY mattered in the grand scheme of things. For all the flack that Javale gets, Flip is a clown. He'll allow Wall to stay in a game after getting t'd up following a staredown when he dunks (vs. Boston), and ROUTINELY lets Blatche loaf, get beasted on by Dalembert, and shoot 19 footers w. no repercussions. Javale has been a whipping boy for as long as Flip has been the coach and other guys do just as many dumb things with no punishment. The team sucks, but McGee has been the best player thus far into the season. He's made a ton of progress on both ends of the floor. If anyone needs to be benched, it's Flip.
    • Albert  •  Washington, District of Columbia  •  4 months ago
And another thing...when talking about Javale's triple-double, just remember who was drawing up plays for him in the final minutes of that blowout. Flip.

stupid coach! that's why wizards always lose simply because of the system of flip! it doesn't fit well to the young guns.
    • nuggets  •  Cicero, Illinois  •  4 months ago
Embarrassing???? I dont get whats embarrassing about throwing down a flashy dunk on a break away. Flip Saunders should be embarrassed. I dont get the context of him being on a bad team. Is it only o.k. to have fun if you're on a good team? Because nobody seems to mind the constant ally oops at the heat games. And to the commenters that are sayin he should learn how to play defense, you should learn how to look at facts because McGee leads the league in blocks/game and is in the top 10 in rebounds/game. Everybody who is upset needs to chill out.

Flip needs to get fired!! His team is not a 1-12 team, so that's on the coach. J.Wall hasn't developed this season and I think that's on the coach. Fire him!!
    • BossMan  •  4 months ago
Yeah Flip... that's the issue... dumbazzzzz.....
    • Peter  •  4 months ago
you know kelly dwyer definitely does suck. i think yahoo should fire his guy. he ridicules people with his poorly written (and most probably inaccurate articles). maybe yahoo should check how many negative comments you get every time you write and fire you. this aint trolling, this is truth,,,,
    • C.N.S.  •  Ogden, Utah  •  4 months ago
So what, he showboated on a fast break dunk. That kind of thing can fire up your team and give them energy and turn the tide of the game in your favor.

Or your coach can 'flip' out and bench you for it, hurting your teams chemistry and drying up any momentum that you're gaining.

Flip Saunders is just looking for people to blame, hoping somehow to distract attention away from himself so he doesn't get fired. It's not going to work. He will not last the season.
    • TGESF.com  •  Charlotte, North Carolina  •  4 months ago
Flip lost this team a long time ago, and probably for excessive antics like this. I could see the benching, and yet again trying to publicly humiliate your player if he missed. He didn't miss. Talk to him about in the locker room and move forward. I've seen far worse shots by far better players. Flip is not a teacher. He's a dictator and he needs to be fired.

Can the "writer" of this article tell me and every other NBA player what your records needs to be before its ok to perform an amazing dunk. An amazing dunk that any paying fan attending the game would absolutely love to see after forking over all that cash to watch the game, and would not mind even if it were performed by the visiting team, much less your own player. The writer goes to all the games for free, for the fans, this stuff is awesome. Screw the writers!! McGee, thank you for doing that dunk on behalf of all the true fans and especially those that paid their hard earned cash to watch you!!!
    • Larry  •  4 months ago
The real embarassment is using McGee as the scapegoat for team's failure
    • justint  •  Manila, Philippines  •  4 months ago
The coaching system of this team has a problem. Flip saunders should be kicked out from D.C. He should be lucky that Javale is still in his roster. It should have gone to Smart Gilas Pilipinas and be naturalized as Filipino. Everyone are excited every time this man steps on the court. He is like mini Dwight Howard. Unfortunately, the coach and staff of wiz are too stupid for them to win many games. Imagine, Blatche is in his peak of becoming a great player on the 4 spot. He is the future of Wiz with his anchor buddy John Wall. And what in the hell does this coaches put him in the bench and start other players like Trevor? See. Simple things like that cant really help a team to achieve their primary goals. Flip doesnt have to blame his players, especially young talents like Javale. Javale can produce rebs and blocks, and he just want to entertain all the fans. And he actually made the dunk with some flare. So how could the coaching staff let him sit down and watch the remaining of the 3rd q? see. Its within the stupidity of the coaching system that's why wiz can win straight games.
