Video: Heat fans set a Mavericks car on fire in ridiculous ceremony

Every time two teams in any sport meet in a championship series, the two involved fanbases decide that they have to affect an air of absolute hatred for several weeks. So while Heat and Mavericks fans might have some bad blood stemming for their previous engagement in the 2006 Finals, the antagonism that surrounds their matchup in this series is overblown beyond all reason.

Keep that in mind as you watch this video of Miami fans -- or, more specifically, the Broward County Sheriff's Department under the watchful eye of the Paul and Young Ron radio show -- torch a Mavs-related car to "inspire" the Heat as they attempt to finish off this series.

Ihosvani Rodriguez described the scene for the Sun Sentinel:

The Ford Maverick that Miami Heat fans have been battering with a sledge hammer at stops around South Florida in recent days went up in flames Thursday morning amid the sound of cheers and bagpipes played by the Broward Sheriff's Office Color Guard.

The torching at the Broward Fire Academy was timed to take place 12 hours before Game 5 between the Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks. [...]

The event was watched by a couple of dozen Heat fans, among them Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti.

"We're gonna generate some heat today by burning this car," Lamberti said.

Indeed, cars usually get hot when you light them on fire!

This public burning is apparently something of a municipal tradition: Fans did a similar thing in 2006 and ended up winning the title. Unfortunately, if the intended symbol here was to show a Maverick succumbing to the Heat, then they probably should have never had the fire department extinguish the flames.

Expect the Heat to get out to an early lead Thursday night, only to go cold late in the game. If you're going to commit to setting something on fire as a display of dominance, buy into the demonstration fully. The whole analogy matters.
