Video: Derrick Rose separates, elevates and detonates

Ball Don't Lie

The give and go. So simple, so basic, yet still so useful in the hands of a patient passing big man (played during Thursday night's matchup between the Chicago Bulls and New Jersey Nets by veteran forward Kurt Thomas(notes)) and a lightning quick jitterbug cutter (in this case, Derrick Rose(notes)). At the risk of aping a lofty ol' meme deployed with great frequency over the years by a very popular Internet sportswriter, it's like Miyagi's description of the crane kick: "If do right, no defense."

With Rose at the top of the key, Thomas flashes to the elbow. The Bulls' All-Star point guard delivers the ball, then jabs right to get defender Deron Williams(notes) off-balance before making a hard cut across the grain to his left. With Brook Lopez(notes) a step slow to press up on Thomas and Williams a step behind after the cut, the 15-year veteran has a clear lane to deliver the ball to Rose in stride with an open path to the tin. Tic-tac-toe.

And what came afterward? Well, there's definitely no defense for that. I believe my man Hubie Brown would call that "a high-percentage shot."

Just another beautiful two-hander for Rose — and seriously, how many guys offer a better combination of explosion and grace on that dunk than Derrick? — in an otherwise not-so-picturesque shooting performance (21 points on 8 for 23 from the floor, including five missed triples) in another Bulls win.
