We’ve been spared having to watch Jeremy Lin’s couch at the dunk contest

As we enter an All-Star weekend that is going to be just about nearly free of Jeremy Lin stories save for his appearance at Friday's Rising Star's Challenge, it's worth wondering if it might be time to start appreciating Lin less as this incredible pro sports phenomenon, and more as a pretty darn good guard for a Knicks team hoping to overcome a disappointing start to the season. Exhibit A came on Wednesday night, when Lin came through with a solid night in New York's win over the Atlanta Hawks, but in front of a local viewing audience whose numbers actually rivaled the pre-Lin era Knicks from last month.

Then there was the news that Knicks guard Iman Shumpert -- who was scheduled to be a part of Saturday's dunk contest before injuries got in the way -- revealed that he was attempting to persuade Lin to aid him in the props department of his performance with the semi-famous couch that Lin slept on before the Knicks guaranteed his contact for the year. The world, collectively, yawned. Or, sick of the story thanks to jerks like me, even treated it as a bit of a relief. Here's Shumpert from the New York Post:

Knicks rookie guard Iman Shumpert, who officially pulled out of the Slam Dunk contest yesterday because of tendinitis in his knee, admitted to The Post he had a "Linsane'' trick up his sleeve.

Yes, he and Jeremy Lin had talked about doing a dunk in which Shumpert would vault over a couch — the symbol of Lin's humble sleeping conditions.

"He was going to help me out,'' Shumpert told The Post. "Once my knee was so sore, I started thinking about it: 'Am I going to be able to jump over the couch?' All kinds of things to think about.''

Of course, the waning fever hasn't stopped this talented crew from putting together Jeremy Lin, in musical theatre form:

Yep. Bring on the playoffs, please.

Phew, that was close ... Though this couch would actually be the only prop making sense by now, beyond that: NO MORE PROPS!!! Give us real dunks.

Oh, please. The dunk contest is ONLY about theatrics and showmanship.
      • Daniela 2 months ago
short of doing a flip or a 720 (both would require supernatural hangtime and a 65" vert.) Props is all we can think of. all the dunks have been done.

Both responses are correct. The old magical feeling of the dunk contest is gone. Until we hit the next level of super-athlete, everything at the current level of todays athlete has been done. There is only so much you can do with the distance between rim and where people are jumping to dunk.

He's a good player and will only get better, very young got plenty to learn, I like his size, his will to get better, his humbleness to da game & players & fans,so let up on him a little bit,he got all it takes to be a super star and he will, Jeremy Lin my humble man!!.. how do u get his rookie card they must have made very little, PRIMO if u have one.

Generally, I do my best to support you KD because I enjoy reading BDL. But J. Lin for life! The slam dunk contest is all about show-boating, props, and fun stuff. If Jeremy Lin's couch could have been used for a prop it SHOULD HAVE! Would make for a great moment to look back on in twenty years as part of the Jeremy Lin story. Even if Lin fades into obscurity, you better believe the people that have your job in twenty years will geekily reminisce about the era of Linsanity and that would have made a wonderful embedded clip! So shortsighted on your part Mr. KD.

As I read the typos in your article that betrayed an amateurish hack pawning himself off as a real journalist - with nothing better to do than talk smack about someone a thousand times more talented and prolific... I joined the collective yawn.

Maybe. He does have better numbers than Rose did last season over his last 10 games

I haven't really considered it until now, but if he turns this NY team (to call them 'reeling' at the time Lin started getting minutes is an understatement) into a division winner/first round at home playoff team, and keeps up these stats (top 10 in PER), he really ought to be in contention.
      • Alexander 2 months ago
nah he should be the most improved but if he keeps up at this numbers and lower the turnovers then he should be a contender

Jeremy Lin is not even a top 20 player in the league, much less not even the best player on his team. Yawn.
