A signed Jeremy Lin rookie card goes for $21,580 on eBay

Jeremy Lin's rookie card (courtesy eBay)

Just a few hours after wondering if the fascination with New York Knicks guard Jeremy Lin was waning, now we've proof that people are still absolutely nuts when it comes to the point guard that wasn't even in the team's rotation three weeks ago. Though Lin doesn't even have a significant endorsement deal to his name (though we've been assured that Nike is on the ready with a pair of Lin-branded shoes), a signed National Treasures rookie trading card from Lin's one season with the Golden State Warriors in 2010-11 just sold on eBay for $21,580. The 36th bid was the winner.

That's right. You could either buy a brand new Volkswagen Jetta with all sorts of lovely features directly off the lot and without haggling over the price, or you could have a signed rookie card (with a tiny piece of Lin's old Warriors jersey included) for the same price. As of the end of the bidding, by the way, Jeremy Lin has played a total of 756 NBA minutes thus far in his career. Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star Kevin Love, for comparison's sake, has played about as many minutes since Jan. 14 of this year.

And what might be the strangest aspect of this is not only the fact that people are still paying huge sums for trading cards, or that there are still basketball cards, but that this wasn't some collector that found what was once an unknown card amongst a stack of throwaways. In fact, the previous owner of the card (assuming this nutty transaction goes through) actually paid a thousand dollars for the card a couple of weeks ago.

    From the International Business Times:

That card is owned by Yair Rozmaryn, a card collector in Manhattan, who bought a Lin rookie card for $1,000 from another collector on eBay two weeks ago. At that point, Lin-sanity was in its infancy: Lin had his memorable 25 point performance off the bench against the New Jersey Nets at home. Two days later, he made his first start and put up 28 points against the Utah Jazz, again playing at Madison Square Garden.

"I saw a lot of potential in him," said Rozmaryn to ESPN on Wednesday.

Pretty fair investment, based on that potential. Kind of unfortunate that Golden State saw fit to dump Lin's $762,000 salary on the potential that the Los Angeles Clippers would pass on matching their team's contract offer to DeAndre Jordan.

When you have Michael Jordan rookie card selling for a mere $200 bucks now..when it was at $10,000 at his peak, you know the card business is a scam.

Good investment by the seller. Flipping it for a 20,000 profit in a couple of weeks...Likely a bad investment by the one who purchased the card. Even if he continues to put up numbers, I can't see the card holding that inflated value.
      • Jason L 2 months ago
I don't think the buyer bought it for an investment. It's probably an Asian person who bought it, and just wanted to have it for Asian pride.

This card could be worth millions once Lin's career is coming to an end. If he ends up in the hall of fame and wins multiple championships as an Asian-American, the card's value will sky-rocket. Definitely a gamble but could payoff big

it depends if the card is a short print or not
i didnt hear if the card was even numbered
the best part about the card is its 9.5 BGS grade
        very impressive condition

Risky investment with potential high return. Fact Lin hasn't played a full season of starter minutes in the NBA. Lin has thrived, really thrived under Mike D'Antonio's point guard favored system. If Lin gets injured than he was just another Joe Charboneau. If Dantonio gets fired than Lin very well could slip into bench contributor. Remember Raymond Felton currently of the Portland Trail Blazers put up all star numbers last year with the Knicks as a starter before being traded to Denver and playing back up to Ty Lawson.

Being that Michael Jordan's rookie card is 30 years older and is only going for $2,000 this investment already is looking very bad even if the Lin card is more rare.

There are a lot of if's considering Jeremy Lin has started less than a dozen games in the NBA, very meteoric rise.

That's just RIDICULOUS! I used to collect cards back in the 1990's,and
I can tell you that a card is only worth what you will pay for it,and then
it's only worth it to YOU! Jeremy Lin hasn't even proven himself in the
league yet as a consistent offensive threat (just see tonight's results
against the Miami Heat). Many times in the 1990's I would seek out
hard to find RookieCards when a player was a rising star, and keep
hold of it until right before the popularity bubble was about to burst,
and then I would sell it,because no matter how good,or popular the
athlete - the RC would always hit a wall, and eventually interest would
dwindle, and that card would go back down in value, and you'd be stuck
with it unless you gave it away (or actually collected that players cards,
and wanted to keep it anyway).

The only good, smart RC investments are the cards from players from
the 1970's,and before when the companies that manufactured the cards
had very small print runs, add to that the fact that most of those printed didn't
actually survive (being thrown out in trash, damaged, etc;) and the numbers
are incredibly small for these cards. The 1980's have also have a few
exceptions for rare, valuable cards such as Michael Jordan's 1986 RC
which if I had $21,580 to spend on cards - I'd be buying a whole lot of
instead...but the best investments are the oldest known cards - even the
regular players from those sets who did nothing in their careers are
worth money as the sheer scarcity of those cards make them valuable.

$21,580 for Jeremy Lin? I just can't see that at all...unless there's something
      I'm missing here???

i love the idiots who say that lin's 15 min of fame are up after one very bad performance against the best team in the nba. reality check, lin is only in his sophomore year. this guy set records in his first five games as a starter, and he has tons of time to improve his game. get out of here with your nonsense, you fake nba fans.

Lin for now is good for basketball business. Ticket sales. I am still not sold out if he can play "ball" against the big boys? Only time will tell. Then again few people can play against Lebron James, Wade and Bosh...Them bums are deadly.
