Shaquille O’Neal grades his TNT work, disses Steve Nash

Shaquille O'Neal, Kenny Smith, and Charles Barkley insult each other (Jesse D. Garrabrant/ Getty).

Shaquille O'Neal has been a mixed bag on TNT's "Inside the NBA" this season, to the point where some people have even credited him with ruining the show. That's overkill — if the show is worse, it's certainly for additional reasons, as well — but it gets at his uneasy fit with the rest of the group. At some point, he'll need to offer something more than yelling out catchphrases during highlight packages.

To his credit, Shaq realizes he's not a finished product as a broadcaster. In an interview with Vibe magazine, he gave himself a middling grade for his work so far (via Deadspin):

VIBE: Evaluate your performance so far in the new gig.

SHAQUILLE O'NEAL: I'm at a low -C. I'm learning and will only get better. I just want to keep people entertained. I don't want to be talking with the big vocabulary and all that [expletive]. I'm short and to the point. I'm very educated and can give you somewhat of a vocabulary, but I don't get to the philosophical side.

The problem for Shaq so far hasn't necessarily been that he's too smart or "philosophical" — no one would consider Charles Barkley to be the most knowledgeable or thoughtful NBA analyst around, and he's as popular as ever. Shaq's biggest deficiency so far has been that his notion of entertainment doesn't quite jibe with the spontaneous, off-the-cuff remarks that have made "Inside the NBA" appointment television every Thursday for basketball fans. Shaq seems to be overthinking his jokes instead of just making them. The hope is that he'll get more comfortable and ease into his role.

Of course, a Shaq interview wouldn't be complete without a little jawing at former teammates. Except, while this interview touches on his oft-mentioned feud with Kobe Bryant, the most interesting discussion concerns Steve Nash and his two MVP awards:

VIBE: Some sportswriters think you underachieved because you only won one MVP.

Shaq: Steve Nash is my boy, but I don't see how the [expletive] he got it twice. I was taught never to complain because you can't beat the system. People know who the real dominant guy was. But Steve Nash, I don't want to say it because you might print it and it might cause problems. I don't believe he beat me out twice.

MVP awards are often given more on the basis of a good narrative than best performance, and in that sense, Shaq has an argument about losing out on the 2004-05 trophy. (His complaints about 2005-06 make no sense, though, because he played in only 59 games that season. He was a key factor in winning the championship but had less to do with their regular-season success.) That's minor, though, in comparison to his larger point about the awards. Judging his career as a disappointment because he only won a single MVP discounts that Shaq was the most dominant force in the NBA for the better part of a decade. The nameless sports writers mentioned in Vibe's question are getting bogged down in inconsequential details. History is about more than what people thought at the time.

That's also why, even though people might be skeptical about Shaq's performance on TNT now, it's worth giving him an honest shot. Despite being a little hammy, he has a strong personality that could flourish once he finds a suitable role at the desk. His "low-C" might be a generous grade now, but it's not the final verdict. That usually comes at the end, not as people judge things in the moment. Just ask Steve Nash.

Still, though, let's get more Chris Webber on TNT. Some people announce themselves as stars and render hindsight irrelevant.

UPDATE: Shaq took to Tout.com to come out against "yellow journalism," which implies he thinks he did not give this interview. I'm not sure why someone would feel the need to fabricate large parts of a conversation, but in the interest of fairness we must note Shaq's response.

Steve Nash WAS the most valuable to his team. Shaq is trying to still be relevant when he's not. He was the man at L.A. up to a point when Kobe started taking over. DWade was the man in Miami and Shaq was just an afterthought. Maybe it's because Nash couldn't make Shaq better in Phoenix that Shaq is a little ticked. In any case, Shaq's lack of improvement to his game caused his eventual irrelevance.

Shaq and Nash BOTH took their brand new teams far. Both had the best records in their conference. Both made it to the conference Finals. Both were deserving of MVP talk. Why does no one mention these things...lazy reporting.

Didn't Nash sue Shaq for stealing his "Shaq vs." tv show idea and win? He's probably a little bitter about that still.

Oops. Just noticed someone already mentioned this.

Can the NBA get some affirmative action going on with there NBA Analyst all they have are seven foot black guy's.And I'm black myself I'm just saying where are the white NBA analyst?

Ernie Johnson hosts Inside the NBA and he's white. there's also Marv Albert, Steve Kerr, Jeff Van Gundy, and Jon Barry, also all white. What they need is an Asian analyst (basketball is huge in China & the Philippines) or some European guy who can talk about all the European players.

steve nash won 2 mvp awards because aside from playing great, he made his team and his team mates around him better. also shaq has shown is has a sensitive ego with the whole kobe titles thing and the attention dwight howard has been getting in orlando. i was happy when shaq was hired for his on air opinions but sometimes he should keep his opinion to himself.

Steve Nash was not the best player by any means but he was definitely the most valuable and even now with a bad team makes his teammates better. Marcin Gortat is quietly averageing 15 and 10. I know his team never won it all, but Steve Nash definitely deserved the MVP over Kobe those years, considering he beat them in the playoffs also.

He turned a terrible franchise into a perennial playoff team. What are you smoking Shaq?

i agree that nash certainly was the "most valuable" player that year, but not the best player. it was also a weak year for MVP voting. bill simmons has a great section in "the book of basketball" devoted to the two years steve nash won mvp.

I am not a kobe fan, but he was MVP in 06. period.

Are you KIDDING? Nash was AVERAGE in 2004-05. That team was LOADED: Amare Stoudemire, Joe Johnson, Sean Marion, Raja Bell, Leandro Barboza, and Boris Diaw. In fact, Phoenix had the distinction of being the ONLY team where two different players ended up in the top 5 in win shares for the season, with Amare leading in offensive win shares, while Shawn Marion was 5th in win shares. In straight win shares, Steve Nash, the "MVP" was 15th, tied with Ray Allen. To give him the MVP under those circumstances is the greatest travesty of all time.

Does Shaq realize if he was 6'2" he's not even in the NBA? He's ONLY in the NBA because of genetics. If he was white he would have been made fun of, called a liability because of his free throw - or lack of - shooting and he had zero zerto zero outside shot. Even Manute Bol hit 6 threes in a game once!

No what will NEVER be said or inferred is that NASH is WHITE. If NASH was a 6'2" black guy he would be "athletic" and deserving. But ANY white guy is not anymore. The make fun of Love and say he's a fluke and any other team he couldn't do it. Look at David LEE who takes on anyone every night and has played the same for many a team. But he's white and racism is absolutely welcomed and sanctioned in the NBA.

No shot,,,,I am mean Shaq....we get it. Nash is white and whgite players in the NBA can only be "dirty" and "gritty" but never talented or athletic because those are black guy things. Shaq without his heighth is absolutely nothing. NOTHING. Even as big as he was Kevin Love STILL shoots a better percent WITH an outside shot (and 3 point title!) AND averages more rebounds and way less height and fatness...I mean weight...and can make more than 1/6 free throws.

Say it for what it is and what you REALLY mean you bigot. Why don't you and the racist derek fisher go have lunch. I bet derek isn't gritty, but is "athletic".

Shaq's problem is he mumbles in low tones when he tries to be serious. We saw this in LA for 10 yrs. every time he was interviewed.
    • The Great Deceiver  •  2 months ago
"I was taught never to complain because you can't beat the system."

Obviously you slept right through that lesson, Shaq. That entire paragraph was a complaint. Your dominance as a player was exceeded only by your penchant for finding something to complain about. And now you're no longer playing, but you're still complaining. Grow the hell up, already.

P.S. Nash was the deserving MVP that season. Deal with it, big fella.

      He's right, Nash deserved 3 MVP's.

Shaq got Nash back by stealing his idea for a TV show while they were teammates. Google "nash shaq TV show steal" and read the sordid details. Really low.

MVP doesn't work that way. Kobe in 2005-06 played the best ball of his career. MVP is the best guy on one of the top teams (usually best record or second best record). It is unfair to superstars without good teammates because good teammates help MVP chances. If they just went by player efficiency rating (the calculated value of all the person's stats given a certain number of attempts plus the team's w/l ratio.): Jordan would have 7 mvp titles, Lebron would have 5, Dirk would have 2, Shaq would have 5, Kareem would have 9, KOBE AND MAGIC WOULD BOTH HAVE 0.
If they decided GOAT by average PER then:
      1. Mj
      2. Lebron
      3. Shaq
      4. David Robinson
      5. Wilt
      6. Wade
      7. Bob Pettit
      8. CP3.
      9. Duncan.
to be number 1 all someone has to do is play 1 great season with a PER above Jordan's average over his career.

Notice the weight O'Neal has lost for this TV gig? If he'd dropped that load as a player, he wouldn't have missed so many games and the last four years of his career wouldn't have been so embarrassing.
    • Jack  •  2 months ago
Shaq wasn't the MVP on his own team in '05 let alone the NBA, Wade was.

'DIESEL' Engines - powerful but 'slow'.....still have to watch a b-game where the powerful beats the faster player.
