Anybody who's read a little Chuck Klosterman knows that choosing between the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers says more than which basketball team you prefer. No, it basically tells other people everything they could possibly want to know about your life. Well, at least in the 80s. Nowadays, things aren't quite so white and black, but differing shades of grey because these are basically the same team, only different.
The barely-different nature of the two franchises even stretches in to the custom Converse All-Star realm. In each case, a small boutique located in the team's home city is offering free pairs of specialty shoes for a limited time. Like I said — the same, but different.
For the Celtics, the white Chucks with Celtics stencils ("The Dynasty Continues") come from Bodega, a Boston streetwear shop. They gave out 50 pairs of the shoes to Celtics fans yesterday, so you're going to have a hard time getting your hands on these, unless a pair turns up on eBay. However, if you're lucky, you can swing by the store tomorrow and pick up a free t-shirt, custom-made for Game 3.
The Lakers version is a little easier to snag, but not really. If you want a pair of Los Angeles-based UNDFTD's custom All-Stars, just head down to one of their three stores and buy a t-shirt emblazoned with the slogan "You Can't Beat L.A." before today ends. Eight purchases from each store get a pair of Chucks. And also, purple laces, apparently.
All in all, a pretty cool idea with execution that leaves a little to be desired. Exclusive shoes are fun and all, but shoes that someone with a stencil kit could make shouldn't be limited to 74 pairs, I don't think. Then again, if you really want these, just get out your stencil kit, I guess. You could start a massive business selling stencilled Converse to basketball fans. That brilliant idea is free of charge.
