Mark Jackson doesn’t want to hear your excuses/is totally making excuses

People that start off a sentence with a line like "I'm not racist, but …" are usually about to say something racist. People that start off a sentence with a line like, "Listen, I love Glen to death, but …" are usually about to say something terrible about Glen. And coaches that start off a sentence with, "We're a no-excuse basketball team …" are usually about to make an excuse about their basketball team. Like, for instance, Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson, who took issues with the refereeing down the stretch of his team's 119-116 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night.

Here's Jackson, from the San Francisco Chronicle:

"We're a no-excuse basketball team," Jackson said. "Like we say, 'One play doesn't lose it.' But on that play at the end, David Lee gets hammered by James Harden, clearly. We don't get that call. David Lee picks up his fifth foul when he doesn't even put contact on Russell Westbrook, who blatantly fouls Monta Ellis.

"These are calls that you cannot get back, but they hurt us. I don't accept 'My bad' from my players all night long, and it's getting old accepting 'My bad' (from the officials) on missed calls."

Now, as Chronicle beat man Rusty Simmons points out, the Warriors didn't exactly do themselves any favors by doubling up the Thunder in turnovers in the fourth quarter, missing more than 60 percent of their shots along the way. But he also mentions that the Warriors are last in the NBA in foul differential, getting called for six more fouls per game than their opponents on average. This can't all be blamed on the team's pace, either, which is just the ninth-fastest this season after years of racing up the possessions.

This never works, though. Maybe in a seven-game series or following a nationally televised contest in May (NBA TV in February doesn't count), but refs are so interchangeable and overworked in the regular season that kvetching about calls gone wrong isn't going to do much but earn you a small fine and a column reacting to the charges.

Of course, things would look a heck of a lot better if Jackson actually started off his rant without making an excuse about not making excuses before he made an excuse.

Just say it. "I'm making an excuse. The reason we lost was because the refs jobbed us. You know where to find me to fine me, Stu Jackson."

Golden State is now stuck at 8-14, still needing to win about two-thirds of its games from here on out to fulfill Jackson's playoff prediction.

I'm not for making excuses either. The Warriors didn't take care of the ball when it mattered most, but those missed calls were Tim Donaghyesk.

So is it "Winning "teams get the calls......... or the teams that get the calls Win? NBA officiating has to work hard to be worse at their jobs then MLB. And MLB umpires always have a 50/50 call and could flip a coin and have the same shot at getting it right. NBA officiating is poor. Schedule, professionalism, travel, not being in a consistent crew, anyway you make "excuses" they are poor at their jobs. But terrific at "jobbing".

Officials need a new paradigm. That could start with and a new commissioner. Europe has better officials than the NBA. Why is that?

It's painfully clear Dwyer either does not like Mark Jackson as a coach or doesn't like GS or doesn't like either. This is at least the 2nd article I can remember of him bashing Jackson. Meanwhile, his articles continue to suck more and more each day. Jackson's Warriors are much better than they were last year. Just about all of their games have been close and could've just as easily ended in wins. Especially if they could get some of the "superstar calls" other team are getting. #dwyersucks

dwyer and wojnarowski are both yahoo writers, who selectively bash players/coaches...and promote their favorites ....heavy bias

Kelly Dwyer, are you really that stupid or or did you think this headline would grab more attention? Mark Jackson made it very clear that he is tired of hearing ( my bad ) from the ref's and NBA headquarters. He won't accept that from his players why should he have to from the ref's and the NBA. Why don't you try wacthing the games so you can make an educated opinion.

Sorry Mark. You are not a premiere coach in the league and your team is not a darling of the Stern-BA. Good luck getting calls against any of the top tier revenue earners this year.

Mark Jackson should let his teams actions speak for him. He's always promising this and that, but his team rarely delivers, and then he cooks up excuses for why they didn't. He's blamed his players already, and the refs. Maybe he should have come into his job with a little more humility and realism, rather than telling everyone they would make the playoffs this year.

Humility? Mark Jackson? Surely you can't be serious...

Why, why, why would he preface those remarks with "We're a no-excuse basketball team"?

The Warriors have some talent and they are a fun team to watch, but they cannot close out games. All Mark Jackson's bluster will not change that. I said it before the season when Jackson was talking playoffs---no chance the Warriors are a playoff team this year. No chance.

The other thing that #$%$ me off is the obvious gutlessness of the media. They are all complicit in the fraud that is NBA officiating. Witness the change in, say, True Hoop's Henry Abbot. When he was just a blogger, the bad officiating was a big concern for him. Now he's getting paid, it's all "Well, it all evens out." and "Nobody says refs decide games." Gutless. Abbot's bosses know they can't cross Stern so neither can any of their employees.Gutless.

Big f'ing difference between "making exuses" and "telling it like it is". And to NOT call out the refs on two of the most blatant bad calls of the year would be nothing more than bending over and taking it.

These were not just missed calls, or badly missed calls...they were totally "We are favoring this team/player over you and you can't do anything about it." calls.

And the leagues' reaction fo complaints from players and refs and the millions, literally millions of complaints from fans?? "Shut up. You're getting paid, so shut up." For Stern to spit in the face of the fans might seem a bad move (since we aren't getting paid), but you're not his customers. His customers are the shoe companies, beer companies and car companies...you are THE PRODUCT he sells to them.

The league COULD make every effort to help the refs get every call right every time. They wouldn't, of course, but the league doesn't even try. The refs are encouraged to favor stars, indulge their own idiosyncratic rules interpretations, make calls from 60 feet away because they're the senior ref, carry grudges, etc.

And if you think the refs are unaware that Stern is a good friend of the owner of OKC, you're naive. Yes, I'm just sayin'...

The NBA is promoting the Thunder and the Clippers this year laying off the Heat . The small backcourt and very small frontline makes this team a lottery pick if they want it. The second team unit can play with anyone but the starting five is missing two players. Curry and Monta are great but one needs to go to make this team go forward.

Mark Jackson needs to go back to TV. Or else get some real coaching experience before becoming head coach in the NBA?! what the heck.

That is on Lacob completely--putting his trust in a rookie coach who was too proud to get some assistant coaching experience and only wanted to be head coach.

The coach is more of a false religious leader that's always the most ridiculous B@S!! And then will copy strategies from other great coach without understanding the concept.
"An empty vessel makes the loudest noise." Mark J please don't pretend you know stuff because you don't.

Gotta agree with Mark Jackson. When you coach a bad team your not going to get the calls especially when your facing a team such as the Thunder. The Thunder never really got those calls Kevin Durant's first couple seasons because they werent a very good team. Just suck it up and put yourself in position to draft your next star. This upcoming draft has the potential to be better than the LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh draft of 2003.

I watched the game, the referees missed some calls, winning teams usually get breaks from the offciating. I know officiating a game can be difficult, but they should be a little more "honest" in making some calls.

The NBA needs to address a vital situation regarding favoritism towards superstars and winning teams. A foul should be a foul whether it is committed by Lebron James D Wade, Kobe, Durant or the rawest rookie. Whether it's committed by a lottery team or a top contender. No excuses. This favoritism has got to stop! It's messing up the game.
