Mark Cuban says the referees stink, again. So what?

Mark Cuban in a famaliar pose (Getty Images)After a frustrating Dallas Mavericks loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night, one that saw Mavs coach Rick Carlisle ejected for booting a basketball in the stands after the refs enraged him with a no-call, Dallas owner Mark Cuban has predictably taken to the press with complaints about dodgy officiating. From ESPN Dallas:

"All I'm saying is some of these guys are bad. Let me rephrase that. Some of these guys are having really bad nights, and it's having an impact. The league's got to come out and say, 'OK, look, we understand they're going through some tough travel or whatever. It's just the way it is.' Otherwise, if that's not an impact, you have to wonder how some of these crews are still on the court."

Cuban is right. The referees have done a terrible job, for the most part, this season in officiating games. But what can be done to right this particular ship? We're having a hard time thinking of anything significant that can be done. The refs are going to stink this season, and we're going to have to find some way to deal with it.

Two major factors have created this uneasy product. For one, scores of veteran referees retired before the 2011-12 season even started, creating an influx of younger referees brought up from the college or minor-league ranks. Secondly, the sheer amount of games that the NBA has greedily mashed together (66 will be placed this year in a space that usually seats about 50) is forcing the referees to officiate even more games than the players are playing. This is a long work week, with insane amounts of travel and, as the cliché goes, every game is a road game for the referees.

Cuban wants greater accountability and more transparent data on which refs are doing what, but what will this actually change? So we'll remember their names easier, go into games with more of a bias against Big Meanie No. 45 That Always Goes Against Dallas, and that ref (because he's human) will then, in turn, look to overreach in response to the known "bias" and attempt to even calls out artificially?

As we've pleaded with people to understand for years, this is an impossible game to call at this level, and the sheer amount of rules rung up by-the-book and unofficial ways (with make-up calls and the like) of calling games provide nothing but a frustrating back-and-forth that is inconsistent and makes for some uneven games. Taking away the hand-check some eight years ago resulted in a better NBA product, but it also means players are dashing to the rim faster than ever, and refs can only see so much in the chaos. Toss in coaches complaining that referees are either calling fouls out of their particular zone, or not delving into a different zone to blow the whistle, and the result is one ugly mess.

The Mavs owner is on point for calling these things out, but what's the next step? Cuban has been hoarding his own referee data for over a decade now. The league surely knows about it and keeps its own brand of ref data, but what will any sort of publishing or re-jigging solve? Wednesday night, Mark went on:

"I mean, it's just ridiculous," Cuban said. "Something needs to be done; someone needs to stand up and say something. So here I is."

OK, there you are. Something needs to be done. Now what?

stern the dictator will fine cuban... that's for sure LOL
      • Redentor 3 months ago
Cuban has always the right to express what he wants to say. He does not deserve a fine because the refs were really stinking.
      • Mc 3 months ago
its true he has the right to express his sentiments but the problem is the dictator. if you complain thru media expect to be fined by the dictator. stern sucks!

Folks,I guess it's time to FINE Stern ,not Cuban !

I'm a Cavs fan and NBA fan, who was watching this game at the end. I only caught about the last 6 minutes of the game, but the officating was HORRIBLE!!!! There were foul no-calls, followed by chippy calls, followed by very obvious traveling no-calls. I was in shock! Usually I want Cuban to calm down, but he had a reason to rant in this one!

after reading your reply reality you hit it on the head. Dirk got hammered on numerous occasions but didnt get any calls .

I can't believe people are okay with the refs not doing a good job. This is why Tim Donahugy(sp?) got away with what he did. All the refs have to do is follow the rule book and they don't.

The NBA refs are ridiculous, they are not calling fouls when someone in the nosebleed seats can tell it is a foul, and then the refs are just butt hurt that they made a mistake, so they T the player up for pointing it out when he express' it to them. The games have way too many ref mistakes for them to be labeled professionals. I see no difference in the officiating from when the NBA had only 2 officials to now having a 3rd. I think since so many bad calls are made to blatant foul calls missed the NBA needs some sort of penalty for the refs either by fining them or suspension, since that what happens to the players that get T'ed up. That may be the only way to get them to start calling games more equal.

Well, if memory is working, didn't one NBA Ref go to Jail?

I've posted negative comments regarding the performance (or lack thereof) of the NBA officials. I think Cuban is right but travel is not the issue; just an excuse. Basically, after watching literally thousands of games, my position is that Stern influences the referees to "control" games rather than officiate them. IF we are all honest, we know the NBA desperately wants "balance" which is unattainable. Therefore, the league does not like blow outs. I also know without doubt that the refs call fouls selectively...they wait to see if a shot goes BEFORE they call the foul. Too often, players cannot get a call while shooting which infuriates them. Fouls also get physically harder when the calls are not made which ramps up the frustration and potential for fights...all on the refs and Stern. Some players, no matter how often they are fouled, just can't get to the line...some who formally averaged 10 or 12 attempts per game, now only average 5-6...since the players did not change their game, this makes the situation obvious to me. The entire 'flagrant foul' issue is bogus; again, because it is applied inconsistently. Watching an NBA is getting pretty difficult...we want to see players at their best...we do not want to see refs controlling games.

I quit watching the game a couple decades ago when a great Kings team got ripped off 2 years in a row in the playoffs, the Lakers got every call, no matter what the situation or where the game was played. After that, I found it painful to watch this product on a regular basis so I gave it up...now I just read the news and watch league 'low-lights' seeing the ref ripoffs over and over again, and am glad I'm no longer a fan. No need to fix it, stadiums are still full and millionaires are being paid. Go figure. Nothing will change until the fans quit supporting the NBA money machine.

You mean a decade ago. Because the Kings weren't a great team in the early 90's jackass.

lol kobe and shaq were not winning championships in 92!

I agree with Cuban. The officiating shouldnt be a factor in the outcome of a game. The refs need to be held more accountable for the amount of power they have. Look at what Donahue got away with, how much has changed since then?

worst officials in pro sports ...most sports actually follow the rulebook ..starcalls/no calls/inconsistent/flops...did i mention 'starcalls' ...? ...
    • skilled  •  3 months ago
referees are biased. they officiate in a way that their favored team wins. they helped the lakers win three titles coached by jackson. who can forget that. the flopping of fisher, the travelling of shaq and his offensive fouls not called. referees should be replaced by machines, we have the technology. The problem? they might program the machine to favor one team, yikes.

Don't forget the flopping Blake Griffin.

DONT FORGET TO MENTION THE FAVORITISM TOWARDS NOWITSKI NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO TOUCH HIM, AS WELL GALLANARI, DAVID STERN HAS A DIRECTIVE TO HELP GALLO AND NOWITSKI,, WHICH IS WHY SO LITTLE CONTACT BRINGS A FOUL CALL AGAINST PLAYERS WHO ATTEMPT TO GUARD THEM
      • Jesse K 3 months ago
yes, Maatman, that is why Dirk & somewhat Gallo destroy international competition as well. Dirk single handedly carry the offensively anemic Deutschland team to respectable finishes in just about every int'nl tourney they've played in - that is, unless you are calling for an international conspiracy theory, in that case we best get the CIA up in this lol.

You Know what ticks me off even more is the starcalls... I cant seem to find a game to watch where Labrick James, Dwade, Blake Griffin, chris paul kevin durant xt xt xt go inside the paint, its almost imidiatly followed by a foul, like its given to them... I honestly think thats the whole problem not that they are making bad calls, they are treating their favorite NBA stars and they always watch out for them... trust me, Watch Miami heat basketball and you will see what Im talking about, watch blake griffin and KD.... so many calls in their favor... someone stat me on how many free throws blake shot a game... sometimes its more than the opposing home team... thats the problem people not the wrong call, even though they do that as well but not as much, its superstar treatment that gets them to act this way.... you just watch some bball and you will see what im talking... every single star gets help from refs on fouls,... google free throw stats of the superstars and ill tell you if im lying or not...
      • Bk2Az 3 months ago
i agree...but what else is new?? the idea that the refs favor players is absolutely not new. remember when Alonzo Mourning complained about MJ??
like is said...the best way to combat the refs is to be more thorough at executing your offensive/defensive schemes...shoot better free throws...higher FG pct...and things like that. when the game is too close, there's always a chance the ref can affect the outcome...therefore, don't let it be close!

want to see ridiculously one sided reffing at its pathetically finest?? look no further than Miami Heat 2012 playoff basketball
    • koven66  •  Dallas, Texas  •  3 months ago
what ? nobody was watching the playoffs last year when they stopped calling offense initiated contact if the defender has both hands up? try turning the sound down and actually watching a game. the games have a way nicer flow to them.
p.s. dallas native and i think cuban needs to shut up and let them play

Yeah, I know it's a rhetorical question, and Dyer has long ago joined the rest of the media in covering up the horrible, corrupt, lousy job the refs get away with, but I have an answer.

See, the people who advocate the refs just follow the rule book are being naive. Because the man who runs the league has made it very clear that he views this league as solely an entertainment product, and that the game of basketball won't make as much money if it's played by the rules as it does now.

The Little Dictator has made it obvious that the refs will make sure stars stay in games AND BE STARS. That this is more important than the rules, because the customers (his fans) of his (Stern's) clients (the owners) are too stupid to support a league that JUST PLAYS BASKETBALL.

So we get our "stars" served up to us with traveling and free throws galore and plenty of slam dunks and a free pass after they have five fouls. That's what Stern expects and that's how the refs call the games.

Given all that, is it any wonder that striving for a high degree of objective accuracy in calling the games is a very secondary goal?

The officiating is terrible cross the league. What happened to technicals for flopping? Lebron elbows people 5-6 times a game away from the play and has never been called. Players have been holding guards without calls, and grabbing them every time on pick and rolls without calls. What gives?
    • trollificus  •  Salt Lake City, Utah  •  3 months ago
Anybody seen the recent headlines from the work of that "Officiating Czar" Stern hired after the Donagy scandal?? Me neither.

The gag order/crackdown tactic seems to have worked, for the most part. Stern's arrogant and cynical "This is the product that puts money in your wallets so shut up!" comments last year were pretty blatant, I thought.

Stern can't believe anybody could possibly place concerns about "fairness" or "level playing fields" ahead of money, so for him, "more money" is the trump card in any argument about the officiating. That so many agree probably says something about 21st century America, eh?
    • gregory d  •  Anchorage, Alaska  •  3 months ago
The refs have had a bad 25 years from what I can tells. Letting Jordan travel when he wanted to. Shaq was able to just push people around. When you here the commitators say its against the rules but thats how he plays the game so the refs let it go. That means the NBA does not care about the rules. As long as it's stars are able to be stars thats all that matters.
    • Thanatos  •  3 months ago
Well, for one, the refs could actually start calling the travels that happen every other play.
