Kevin Garnett has pocket kings, no arsenal of firearms

Celtics forward Kevin Garnett has a deserved reputation as one of the most intense players in NBA history. Fittingly, one of the defining moments of his career occurred when he went a little too far. In an interview before Game 7 of the 2004 West semifinals between KG's Wolves and the Sacramento Kings, he delivered his infamous rant about being "ready for war" and loading up with uzis, shotguns, and all other manner of firearms. With the nation involved in two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, it was in poor taste.

Friday, Garnett made another analogy, although this one is tame in comparison. With the Celtics down 2-0 to the Heat, Garnett thinks the team can regain its edge. From Paul Flannery at WEEI.com (via SB Nation):

"The urgency is there," Garnett said on Friday before the team took the practice floor. "This is it. We've used all of our lifelines. This is it. I hate to say it like that, but it's true. There's not a: Cool, keep your composure. Nah, this is: You've got to get the next game."

He continued, "We're taking their best shot. I still don't think we've played our best basketball, and we've got to do that. We can't just come out here and talk about it. We're not on the white sands of the beach [any] more. We're back in the jungle. Hopefully that'll do some good for us. We'll figure it out. I told you man, we're all in. I've got two pocket kings and I'm all in. Let's do it."

Wow, talk about mixed metaphors. Apparently Boston is in the jungle, where survival matters, and it's going to do it by playing a really good hand. I didn't know the World Series of Poker was broadcast in the Amazon now.

Whatever the case, it's good to know that KG is still approaching the series with his trademark intensity. Along with Rajon Rondo, he's one of two Celtics with the potential to dominate the Heat, as both Ray Allen and Paul Pierce have their hands full with Dwyane Wade and LeBron James, respectively. A classic KG rant may indicate that he's ready for a great game.

If he's not, then his next comments may involve playing pinochle in a retirement home. Zing!
