Jeremy Lin scores his second straight Sports Illustrated cover, joining some lofty company

You can point to New York's cupcake schedule in the days following Jeremy Lin's ascension into the Knicks rotation on Feb. 4. You can point to the minutes he plays in New York's frantic pace, as Jason Terry did on Sunday, and all the possessions he gets to dominate. That's what Player Efficiency Rating -- which adjusts for pace, minutes, and takes into consideration all those turnovers and all those possessions used up -- is for. And, 2 1/2 weeks into his star turn, Jeremy Lin has gone from D-League refugee to eighth in the NBA in PER. And, as the biggest story in sports at the moment, he's more than deserved his two straight Sports Illustrated covers. Here's this week's:

    And last week's:

Bust out the excuses. He's playing in the country's biggest market. Because of his Asian-American heritage, he's reaching out to a basketball-mad community that hasn't had an American-born star to call its own. It's February, the brackets have yet to be filled, pitchers and catchers just reported, and the football season ended a few weeks ago -- the slowest time of the sports year.

Doesn't matter. Lin has earned this dual distinction. One that, as BuzzFeed's Mike Hayes pointed out, has only been shared by Dirk Nowitzki and Michael Jordan amongst NBA idols.

The furor will die down. The stats will mellow out. The Knicks will likely battle it out in the lower reaches of the Eastern Conference playoff bracket, and the puns (hopefully) will go away forever. Things are bound to come back to earth, if only slightly.

It's been a pretty fun ride, though.

I caught myself watching an entire basketball game the other night.... The last time I watched an entire game was when the Dream Team played in the Olympics! yeah... it's been a while. haha So say what you will about Lin, but the boy can pack a stadium. I even stayed on the channel to watch his interview. It's just really nice to see an athlete talk about the game as a team effort again.... his humility and grace on and off the court is refreshing and welcome. Please keep up the good work!

Ever watch Derrick Rose and his interviews? If you like Lin, Rose is worth a look.

I understand what you mean, but you haven't watched a full game since the Dream Team Olympics? I take it you are not much of a fan of basketball, ncaa or the nba...

anyways, if it helps bring viewers back to the sport, then I guess he is being marketed correctly.

If he's able to make non-basketball watchers watch, he's doing a good job. For those who don't like him, nobody's making you watch/read/listen about Lin. There are other sites/articles you can tune to.

It's amusing how so many people still don't seem to understand how the Internet works.

Roll Tide, your brain is just as small as your dick. Jeremy Lin won't date a trash. He is too smart for her. They probably won't speak the same level of conversation.

He's one of the few basketball players that can actually do something if he had to retire tomorrow. Now that's a rarity.

It's so 'true'......Have not watched any basketball, for ages..but, this KID has ignited the kid in me..
My prayer is that he will NOT be a 'hero' to other kids, but will be a ROLL MODEL......
And let's not allow the media to portray him as an 'asian'....He is AN AMERICAN....and that is the way he should be viewed as....Also...I do realise 10 games is not (probably) enough, to earn him a spot on the "all-star' team...But...the enthusiasm he has generated, is probably "unprecedented", and the NBA pundits, need to acknowledge that....

no basketball scholarship for college. Went to a IVY LEAGUE school. Graduated from Harvard with 3.1 GPA in economics. Went undrafted for a while then got picked up. Forget all the haters. This guy is a walking American Dream. All the thugs in the NBA can't even spell.

Props. Way to go Jeremy!!! He seems so real... not like a lot of some of these NBA players who are so stuck up that they have to go around talking crap instead of saying "Good Job". Some ball players can be so stuck up... but not Jeremy.... :) I look forward to watch more of him in the future... :)

He is a very humble person. He seems to really enjoy playing basketball. I am happy for him that he got his opportunity to show his talent. Now the coaches want keep him the bench. His game is very good. But, no match for the Miami Heat. Tonight it is on.

American sports fans especially in New York expectations are always high for their sports teams. The Knicks were in a funk and there fans were down in the dumps. Like when the American olympic hockey team upset the Russians at Lake Placid and America went wild is just what happened in New York. Knick basketball fans and fans through out our country spirits were lifted with the arrival of Jeremy Lin and his stellular court performance. We needed it and it's fun to watch as long as it lasts.
