Greg Oden’s not even healthy enough for knee surgery

Greg Oden (Sam Forencich/Getty)Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden has been one of the most disappointing draft picks in league history, to the point where it's difficult even to call him a bust. He's been injured so many times, and missed so many games, that it's been hard to get a sense of his ceiling, or what could reasonably be expected of him if he were to stay healthy enough to play. He's a suggestion of an NBA player more than a real one, these days.

In fact, his health is now such a problem that he's not even able to undergo knee surgery on the timetable he'd hoped for. From Ben Golliver of Blazersedge.com (via PBT):

Portland Trail Blazers Acting GM Chad Buchanan said Friday that center Greg Oden is still not clear for surgery on his left knee because of the ankle blood clots. "Nothing new," he said. "The doctors in Colorado are addressing his blot clot and once that is complete Greg will have the surgery on his left knee."

Friday marks two weeks since Oden's right knee surgery. The Blazers had said repeatedly the plan was for Oden to undergo left knee surgery within 10 days to two weeks.

That's three injuries mentioned in five sentences, if you need the math written out for you. That's a lot of problems, obviously, and fairly bad news considering Oden will be a free agent this summer. If he wants an NBA job, he's probably going to have a hard time coasting on his old reputation as a defensive game-changer. Instead, he'll have to take a job with few expectations — maybe even a D-League spot — and work his way up from there.

It's an unfortunate turn of events for a guy who once held so much promise. But it's also way past time to get realistic about his career prospects. Sadly, if the injuries keep piling up, retirement might be the next decision.

Oden was hurt prior to coming to Ohio State, (broken wrist) an injury that kept him out of 10 or so games beginning the season. In fact, he shot free throws one handed for about half of that season. He never had any other problems while there and was a defensive beast in college. He had some post moves and was a hard worker. His body has betrayed him and now he is the butt of jokes everywhere. But it makes people feel better about themselves; making fun of others misfortunes. Sigh.....

I don't feel sorry for Greg Oden in the slightest. I feel sorry for the Portland Trail Blazers for drafting this guy instead of Durant. $20 million for 1 season of play and people are feeling sorry for the guy? Unbelieveable!!!

You feel sorry for a hundred million dollar sports team? I mean their front office made the choice to draft Oden, he didn't put a gun to their heads and make them do it. He had injury problems in college, so it's not like there weren't already red flags. Of course people feel bad for Oden, by all accounts he was a good kid. Plus he could play ball! It's not like were talking about some bum who couldn't play, we are talking about a dude who had the potential to influence the game on the defensive side and absolutely control the glass. Yeah, I feel bad for him, he gets to forever think about the what if's and what could be's that drive us mad. He collected $20 million for his rehab and 1 season, but for some people the game is bigger than the money. To try and come back from 3 microfracture knee surgeries is love man, and to lose someone that LOVES the game is rough (Brandon Roy included)

And for the guy who said Oden looked weak in college, you are effectively saying that he did not merit being drafted. Right..... That's why he was selected #1. Because he looked weak in college....

First Sam Bowie and now Greg Oden awesome drafting Portland, Oden couldn't get thru college without being injured and you take him over Durant. Idiots.

Greg Oden is a bust, he's not getting any healthier anytime soon either. If he were a race horse he would've been put down already. Teased by the solid few games he's had, he cripples the team to a point where he's not there to play for them every night, while not allowing the team to move on and find an every game big man. I think Steve Hawes is turning into that in Philly with the Sixers too, definitely have to watch for the signs.

So the Trail blazers selected Sam Bowie over Jordan and Barkley and Stockton, and Thompson over Bird and Oden over Durant. I don't wish to be too critical but I don't think their front office is too good.

That's what I have been saying for years..

Bowie was drafted in 1984. Do you think the same guy drafted Oden in 2008? DUH!!!!!

That happens when you grow faster than your body is meant too, then the added stress of competetive baskeball just takes a toll on an already stressed frame. Take what money you have coming to you and go home and enjoy your life.

it's sam bowie michael jordan all over again (except i think sam bowie had a more productive career than oden and doubt kevin durant is as good as jordan)

The "Madden Curse," the "Sports Illustrated Cover Curse," and now the "Curse of the Portland Trail Blazers." Bill Walton, Sam Bowie and Greg Oden all were plagued by it.
      • GEL 3 months ago
Sam Bowie and Greg Oden yes they got the curse of Portland but not Bill Walton, Walton lead the Trailblazers to become the NBA CHAMPION.
      • Banksters are Thieves 3 months ago
Walton was a star. Yes he got hurt but that guy was the main reason for their only championship.

What about Duke players and their strings of bad luck? Grant Hill, Bobby Hurley, Cherokee Parks, Danny Ferry, Jay Williams?

He made around 20 mil since dropping out after 1 year of college. That is pretty good. I would settle for that. It is too bad about he career. I understand his disapointment. If healthy he could have made a lot more doe. He can still start a new carreer doing something else. I think it is time for him to call it quits. He is lucky. My dream is to have no debt. Have my house paid for and enough money to retire on. Not have to work until I die. That is probably the American dream. He has all that already and if he is smart with his money and he can still do something else. I am also pretty sure he has not had to pay for any of these medical proceedures either. He is very lucky in my book. I hope he knows that he is very lucky in many ways.

I realize the money will really help, but I hope other great college players take heed to Greg's misfortune and develop more in college before their bodies and spirit are subjected to the NBA.

I bet Portland's GM cries every time he sees Durant play.
      • Allen 3 months ago
Oh wait, they don't have one!
      • riverman 3 months ago
No, we beat them once in their homecourt and actually should have the win from our homecourt without a terrible call. I don't think Chad is crying about Durant. Seems more like comment writers do all of that.
      • Erik 3 months ago
lol yeah why would he be upset about Kevin Durant? Only a top 3 player in the league that he passed on for a guy people are suggesting should consider retirement....

The Blazers with a healthy Roy, Oden, and the current line up would be scary good. GM did a good job assembling a contender....serious injuries have been dogging Portland like no other team.

well at least the blazers can pay for an education since he has proven he aint a basketball player.and portland made him rich !

Chin up, Greg--take it day by day and stay true to yourself. I'm sure it has been disappointing for you as well as the Portland organization. You have my support--gotta support fellow Indy people. I went to LC but shuttled up to LN for a few classes--what fun to hear about you. Somebody should reunite you with Mike Conley, Jr. Maybe that will be the trick.
