Tony Stewart had a metal rod inserted into his leg as part of a second surgery for the broken leg that he suffered in a sprint car race on Monday night.

Per a release from Stewart-Haas Racing, the surgery "involved inserting a metal rod inside the tibia, pressing it to its anatomic position."

This surgery was performed in North Carolina. The first surgery, to stabilize Stewart's right leg, was done in Iowa, where he was racing in Oskaloosa at Southern Iowa Speedway on Monday. He was leading the race when a lapped car spun in front of him.

Stewart remains in the hospital, and the team says a discharge date has not been determined. Neither has a replacement driver for beyond Watkins Glen. Max Papis is filling in at the road course.
