NASCAR suspends use of cable cameras at tracks

No, this isn't satire. But maybe Warped Wednesday can tell the future?

NASCAR released a statement on Friday announcing that in conjunction with the networks that broadcast the sport, the decision had been made to suspend use of cable cameras at NASCAR races until further notice after the camera mishap at the Coca-Cola 600.

"Pending further investigation of the cable camera system incident during the NASCAR race in Concord, North Carolina in May, NASCAR has decided, in collaboration with its broadcast partners, to suspend all media partner usage of aerial camera systems that hang over race tracks during its sanctioned events" NASCAR said in a statement. "The safety of our competitors and our fans remains NASCAR’s number one priority, and until total evaluation and analysis have been completed, usage of this particular technology enhancement and any similar enhancements, has been suspended."

At the 600, the cables suspending the camera broke and became draped across the track. It was a harrowing scene for those in the grandstands and two fans were injured. Multiple cars also suffered damage after running over the cable -- Marcos Ambrose likened it to fighting a giant squid.

You'll notice the suspension of the suspended camaras (apologies for the bad pun) right away, too. ESPN has used a cable cam that hangs over pit road at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for dramatic shots of the cars zooming down the frontstretch. It obviously won't be there when the network takes over the rest of the Cup Series schedule on July 29.
