Jeff Gordon talked with his daughter about his wreck

NASCAR, more than any other sport, carries the specter of grievous injury, or worse, with it every time the green flag drops. You see the drivers kiss their families goodbye before every race, and there's a part of you that starts wondering what if. Let's face it, nobody expects the worst when a pitcher goes out to throw a few innings.

Where the pathos ratchets up exponentially is when kids come into the equation. The idea of watching your dad (or mom, let's be fair) drive 200-plus mph has to be a thrilling one, but what about when things don't go so well? Jeff Gordon faced just such a scenario this past weekend, and fortunately, he was able to walk his 4-year-old daughter Ella through the wreck replay from a safe distance.

As Scene Daily notes, father and daughter watched the wreck together on Sunday morning, as Ella was asleep when the wreck happened. And thankfully, Gordon could assure his daughter that he was just fine.

"That is the downside of being a parent as a race-car driver when things like that happen," he said. "Had she been awake and heard the reaction of my wife, that probably would have gotten her more concerned than anything else."

Scene noted that Jeff Burton, who has older children, has a broad sense of perspective. "You shouldn't be stupid in the decisions that you make, but you have to do the things that make you alive," he said. "Part of living is experiencing it. If you shelter yourself, you'd never enjoy things. I want my kids to take chances in life, but I also want them to be calculating and understand the risks."

Thankfully for the fans, but especially for the drivers and their families, safety advances are such that drivers can walk (or, in some cases, limp) away from these wrecks. Here's hoping that's the worst these kids see.

Kyle was blocking, and should have realized the faster car, but everyone wants to win..Jeff did back off when he thought it was too much, then the crybaby spun out but saved it, too bad Jeff couldn't..And how many times has Kyle done that to others? Don't tell me it's ok for him and not for someone else..The whole race featured that type of racing..

I have seen many dislikes posted below about Jeff being o.k. after the crash. Some people are just idiots and have no class. I mean that's just idiotic ! I absolutely HATE Kyle Busch, but when I see him in a bad wreck I immediately pray that he's o.k. I have great respect for all Nascar drivers. They risk there lives every time they get into their cars and deserve that respect no matter how much you dislike them.

I've been a Jeff Gordon fan since his first NASCAR race. I was not worried about his safety when he got hit only the fact that he was now out of the race. Safety equipment is awesome in these cars and as long as he has and uses his safety gear he will be ok as will all the other drivers.
      GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO JEFF.

Past history indicates that this is just about the time something bad will happen. Drivers get complacent, maybe take a few extra chances (or as in the case of Dan Weldon someone somewhere else in the pack does something ill advised) and another widow is made. You can only make racing safer, you can't make it safe.

People in oher sports need to look at JEFF GORDON and learn a few thing .. one he is not greedy he spreads his fame and wealth with others .. Just see his children's hospital, and the time he and his family spend helping others out side of racing.. Jeff is the man.. and all you rappers, football players and athletes of other sports there is no happiness in hating and banging .. in 20 years he will still be wealthy ..most of the haters ..will be BROKE!!!!! why.... Because he has been woking on being great for a long time and knows and respects other helped him get where he is at ..No one gets to the top alone....remember that ..

I've been a NASCAR fan for awhile now (#24 fan myself), and I saw the video of the accident. Kyle didn't want to give up his position during those last 2 laps, and everyone's trying to win at that point. Real glad that Jeff got out ok. Here's hoping that 2012 will be the year for ol' 4-Time to finally get number 5!!!

Lainey, I would show that to my child 1) to show them that such a thing is a possibility and 2) to show just how safe the cars actually are. Think about it, had this been 2001, Gordon might not be standing today. It had an eerie resemblance to the impact Sr. had. And to roll on top of that shows how good the cars can hold up and with the HANS, etc. Also, racing is an accident prone sport. Moobs could have gotten out of the way and Gordon could have waited a straightaway. Give and take. All accidents are usually two way ordeals. This was no different.

That is an outstanding picture of Jeff talking to his daughter. You know there is a close relationship there and a whole lot of love.

to lower some of the danger, get juan montoya off the track, he already has ruined 2 cars
      • Trouble 2 months ago
ABSOLUTELY! Montoya set up wrecks last year way too often that took out contenders. He needs to be banned from NASCAR!
      • Malcom Burgess 2 months ago

    • robert  •  Waterloo, Illinois  •  2 months ago
