We now know what Michael Waltrip Racing plans to do with the part-time car it's running next year. And we now know what Jeff Burton is planning to do in 2014.
The team announced Monday that Burton would assume a part-time driving and test driver role starting with the third race of the season in Las Vegas.
“Michael Waltrip Racing has two teams and drivers racing for the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship in 2014 and our third team will play a very important role in that pursuit,” co-owner Rob Kauffman said in a release.
The team is running full-time teams for Clint Bowyer and Brian Vickers and the third car, which was driven by Martin Truex Jr. last season, is now the part-time car that Burton will drive. The team was forced to reduce it to a part-time schedule after long time sponsor NAPA departed in the wake of the race manipulation scandal at Richmond.
And the car's number is changing too. Instead of the No. 56 that was run with Truex, who is now at Furniture Row Racing, it will be the No. 66. The team said any other races on Burton's schedule would be announced in the future.
