Let's start off with some silly season fun, shall we? According to this report by Motorsport.com, if Carl Edwards goes to Joe Gibbs Racing for 2015, he could have the M&Ms sponsorship while Kyle Busch's Monster Energy sponsorship moves up to the Cup Series.

It's an idea that makes sense, even if Busch and M&Ms haven't had the best relationship through his Joe Gibbs Racing career. And Edwards is a wholehearted pitchman for his sponsors. However, as was noted, the idea of Edwards being sponsored by candy is a bit contradictory given his fitness-buff status. (Side-note: yours truly is a fitness addict as well and even technically a fitness professional. I love M&Ms.)

But we still haven't gotten any public proclamations about Edwards' contract status for next year. Heck, Biffle's impending agreement with Roush Fenway to stay with the team was reported last week and nothing has been announced officially. Is this Edwards-to-JGR-and-M&Ms scenario feasible? Yes. Is it probable? We'll find out over the coming months.

Before we get to the mailbag, I also have a request of you, readers. I started having a Twitter conversation with Alan Cavanna of NASCAR.com about bad NASCAR shirts, and we want to see yours. Tweet me your favorite bad NASCAR shirt or email me at the email above and below. And you may get featured in an upcoming Happy Hour as well. NASCAR-land is full of bad apparel, which jives nicely for a column I'm working on for the future.

It also wouldn't be fair if I asked for your bad shirts without showing you mine. This is a shirt I had when I was probably 15 or so that's now on a t-shirt quilt in my house. When you're a teenager, you don't necessarily get the double-entendre possibilities. When you're an adult, well...

Now, the questions.

Has NASCAR ever or would they ever consider have a couple of short races a year featuring some of the sports legends?  Rusty Wallace, Darrell Waltrip, Dale Jarrett, etc - William

There was a legends race at Bristol in March of 2010. Cale Yarborough, Harry Gant and David Pearson, among others, were there. And then this happened to Larry Pearson.

Pearson was hurt in the crash, fracturing his pelvis, breaking his right hand and his left ankle. The race was not run in 2011. That's the right call. While it's a fun idea in theory (and could be run again in the right circumstances), we saw how dangerous it can be.

 

Brian is referring to the exceptional Camping World Truck Series race at Gateway on Saturday night. The track returned to the schedule after a St. Louis businessman signed a one-year lease from Dover, who owns the track.

It needs to stay on the schedule, so I'm going to say yes. But as we discussed in the Chrome Horn podcast, there are challenges facing tracks that don't host Cup races (see: Iowa) because they're not as revenue-rich on NASCAR non-Cup race weekends.

The second reference is to the storming of the Maracana press center on Wednesday by Chilean fans. Of the media centers I've been to I'm going to say Daytona and here's why. The media center is in the middle of the infield fan experience, so fans are not very far away. While the building itself is secure (I'm not implying anything, DIS officials), the work room is very close to the main entrance and exit door. So once a horde would get in, there's not much distance to the media work room itself. (The work room was what the Chilean fans got into at the Maracana.)

And the third is about this dude who took his VW for a joyride. I think this one is easy and it has to be Pocono, right? It's large, in the middle of nowhere, and attracts wildlife and a drunk guy once. Plus, cars have almost gone from the track into the infield, so why not vice versa?

What the heck are you talking about? The World Cup of Soccer fine. NASCAR is American's Stock CAR racing. Go out and see you local track. Some are dirt and some are pavment. See how the drivers and their crews set up the cars just to run that track. NASCAR changes every weekend. Some drivers like a loose car and some like a tight car. Some will run high and some will be in the middle or at the bottom of the track. Go out and see what I am talking about. To do that is to go out for a Friday and sit in the stands and watch one car at a time go around the track. Then see where they run when they qualify. Yes, you have to be middle to high in the stands. Most of NASCAR'S drivers can drive any race car that you put them in. Any Friday is a show all by it self. Go see what I mean. - George

If George is not a fan of the NASCAR World Cup, that's fine. But this is the most nonsensical rant against it I've seen. What does racing at local tracks or in NASCAR have to do with having drivers RACING against each other in hypothetical head-to-head matchups? And besides, we've got to have some fun in the summer, right?
