Formula 1 driver Robert Kubica suffered serious injuries in a rally car accident and according to reports, surgeons are fighting "to re-establish the functionality" of his right hand.

From our friends at Yahoo! EuroSport: (link contains video of the aftermath of the crash)

A spokeswoman for his F1 team Renault said Kubica, their leading driver and a race winner in Canada in 2008 with his former BMW-Sauber team, had been flown to hospital.

"After undergoing extensive medical checks this morning, Robert Kubica has been diagnosed with multiple fractures to his right arm, leg and hand. He is currently undergoing surgery at the Santa Corona Hospital in Pietra Ligure," the Renault statement said.

Kubica joined Renault after driving for BMW Sauber. Either Bruno Senna or Roamin Grosjean will likely replace Kubica alongside teammate Vitaly Petrov.

Our best wishes go out to Kubica for a full recovery.
