No folks, Ray Evernham won't be returning to Jeff Gordon's pit box — EVER — but he is interested in a consulting role with Hendrick Motorsports.
"Rick and I just have to meet and discuss things," Evernham told the Associated Press Saturday at Homestead-Miami Speedway. "I'm interested in a lot of things Rick is doing, on a global basis."
For the first time in years, Evernham, who won three championships with Gordon in 1995, 1997 and 1998, is free to do what he wants. He's absolved of his commitment to Richard Petty Motorsports/Gillett-Evernham Motorsports/Evernham Motorsports.
While he has no interest in returning as a crew chief, a stance he made clear prior to last year's Daytona 500, Evernham said a "project" role would interest him, which could mean something in research and development.
