Despite crash, Dale Earnhardt Jr. happy about return of pack racing

Even though his Budwesier Shootout ended after a crash, there may not have been a driver happier about the pack racing that dominated most of the evening than Dale Earnhardt Jr.

"I like this kind of racing better," Junior said, referring to the pack racing over the tandem drafting style that has dominated restrictor plate racing over the last two years. "At least I know what to expect.  I feel like I have a better chance with this style than I did last year for damn sure."

Few, if any drivers were better at drafting in a big pack than Junior, who has seven Sprint Cup restrictor plate points wins. And Junior's prowess at slicing and dicing through packs of cars was evident, as he led 12 of the 54 laps he completed before being caught up in a crash when Marcos Ambrose got into Joey Logano.

"This is real similar to when we first put the blades on the roofs," Junior said. "These cars that we have now have a really big greenhouse. There is just a massive closing rate. When you get bogged down guys can just fly around you."

The multi-car crashes during Saturday night's race were caused when drivers got into the left rear of the cars in front of them — contact initiated in part by the cars' inability to maintain constant contact nose-to-tail for multiple laps. Those changes to eliminate the two-car tandem for prolonged periods of time worked, Junior said, and not to the point of forcing the cars to overheat while in a traditional restrictor plate pack.

"You don't have to move around. You just hold your damn car where it needs to be and not drive around like an idiot," Junior said. "If you want to drive your car in a straight line and be sensible it is possible [you can]. There is no chaos out there. Yes, there are guys moving around, but it's not necessary. They are not doing it because they are hot or there are problems with their engine running hot or anything like that. They are just having a good time. Everybody is enjoying it."

And while the return of the pack may be the best thing to happen to Junior's restrictor plate chances, he says that the Daytona 500's still anyone's race.

"Maybe being 500 miles guys might use a little better judgment, but I wouldn't count on it. It is a heavy-duty race. It is a pretty big deal to win and its going to be a lot of guys pretty excited about their prospects of winning it. Still pretty much any car can win.  The lottery's still there for the whole field."

Why do you folks read the story if you dislike Jr. so much ??? Just curious.

People do get bored at times you know and when they do they tend to read just about anything.

Easy. He is a nice and a cool guy. It's his fans. Jr. is a below average driver that will NEVER win the Cup. In a word, he's not that good.
      • Kevin Y 3 months ago
You might want to do a little research before posting Jr is below average. For a 43 car field that would put him 23rd or worse average. Plus Jr did with the cup in Nationwide and has been in the chase multiple times as a sprint cup driver.

The ONLY reason to watch Nascar anymore is the wrecks....DVR and fast forward to the wrecks.

I LOVED the race Saturday!!!!! It was the most exciting race in two years! I despise the guy that won but he did a great job of driving like Olgramar said gotta give credit where it is due.

The way all these guys will be wrecking, one of the start and park guys is liable to get back on the track when nobody's left and win the thing!
    • TheJakAss  •  3 months ago
Yup. Junior is not his father. Dale was a hard nosed, highly hated race car driver, that I loved because of his ability to scare people into crashing themselves, well when he was not actually physically wrecking them.

Junior is a RESPECTFUL, very talented race car driver, probably TOO respectful. He has had a 6 win season, and prior to Kyle Bush was probably the best driver of a loose race car in the cup series. Most haters hate him just because they think it makes them original...

It doesn't, and he has a MASSIVE following because he is NOT HIS DADDY. So those of you making the comparison, my guess is, you never watched NASCAR prior to the last decade like everyone else who tuned in after Senior was killed. Most of you have NO CLUE what your talking about and your reason for hating JR, is not even realistic.

though it would be nice if jr joined sr underground

Seriously? Not being a fan of a driver is one thing. Wishing him dead is another altogether. Sliced bread I suggest mental health counseling.

"Dale (sr) was a hard nosed, highly rated race car driver".
Dale (sr) was, and remains, one of the most talented, winningest, competitive, adaptable, and flat out greatest drivers to ever sit behind the wheel of a nascar vehicle. For that, and other intangibles, he struck fear in any driver sharing the same track. to watch him come through the field, from the back to the front, and often victory, was one of the most thrilling and, on his part, courageous, things to witness in motor sports. your comment leaves one to believe you get your information from second hand sources; either that or you just don't get it.
Junior is his own man. let the haters have their opinion, means nothing other than to show their ignorance and jealousy. not many have one as many races as he has already, there will be more to come.

We will loose the most cars in crashes in this 500 than ever
      • Jimmy J 3 months ago
Loose or lose? there is a difference. Last night was like the all star race...no points...just pride...see what you got...see what works..see what doesnt work...and file that info away. I dont think we'll see as many wrecks next week because the drivers know next week is part of the bigger picture...26 weeks til the chase and every spot counts...15th is better than 38th for instance. There will be boneheaded moves...but there are those EVERY week. FYI....How many drivers will LOSE the race because their car is LOOSE?
      • David 3 months ago
Yes there will be a lot of "loose" cars during the race. That usually happens though when there is that much air moving around the the cars as they are driven in a pack at that speed.

Why do most of you compare Jr. to his Dad? One they are not cloned, and are two different people. Jr. has the way he races, and Dad raced the way he did. Per say look at most father sons who have race in the Cup there is no comparison to any of them. We all look back in the day of the Waltrip's, Dale SR. Buddy baker, Cale, and the rest. I ask could these past driver's be as good as they were in the past Now? I don't think so because of the rules. Most would be fined or parked. So to those who try to compare Jr. to his Dad your trying to live in the past through Dale JR.

Why can't anyone say anything positive about their driver anymore, without getting bashed for it? Lighten up people. It's racing. Not the end of the world.

Saturday nights race was as good of a finish as you will ever see. Kyle is an unbelievable talent. He still does immature things but he has grown up a little over the past couple of years. He definitely isn't one of my top 10 drivers but he sure is alot better than my guy Dale Jr.
    • MichaelG  •  Atlanta, Georgia  •  3 months ago
Yea! tell em. Even in Oldschool Raceing when the corner was hit in the left side it was gettin slideways brother( don't do that)only touch when you can maybe when your three wide dont move around and i noticed some SLAM Drafting out there yu gotta PUSH not SLAM and it still comes down to skill or luck thats what is so exciting about it!

It's great to be here in Daytona this time of year, the weather is warm, the girls are tanned, and the beer taste better for some strange reason. None of the losers that are hating on Little E are here, they can't afford to make the trip, not to mention food, a hotel room, or race tickets. That is because they are hiding in their mothers basement, eating her food, and begging for attention. They are a pathetic bunch of losers, probably Obama voters. Anyway, here I am with my wife and friends, drinking a Budwieser, and eating hot wings, lookin at the hot women walk by at the Boot Hill Saloon. If any one of you Jr. hating biotches in Minnesota want to break into my home, I say go for it. LOL

Well, well, well. Go figure. 135 consecutives weeks with a Jr. story on the homepage.
      • Doris S 3 months ago
Not sure how you mean that, but Dale belongs on the front page of every page that is published.
Granted he isn't his father, he doesn't claim to be. He just wants to be his own man and do things his own way. Even without a win in all those races, he is still the best. HE IS NOT AN INTIMADATOR.................HE IS JUNIOR, kind, polite, and very likeable.
      • Air Cntrl 3 months ago
lol, he is still the best? He is a nice guy, very polite, and very likeable. However, these are some of the root causes why he has not won a race in 129 starts. If he had the amount of passion to win a race such as Tony, JJ, or even Kurt he would BE one of the best. btw, there are plenty of guys who are nice, likeable, and polite. Do you see the majority of them in the winner's circle? Nope. Sometimes you have to #$%$ off the competition to beat the competition.

Let's examine the claim that Dale Jr. is a lousy driver. He has 2 Nationwide Championships (consecutive)- tied with Martin Truex Jr. for most among current drivers and in the modern era9th all time Nationwide wins with 23, he won a race an Average of every 9 races he ran in Nationwide and has an average finish of 11thHe was the first rookie to win the all-star raceAt the time of his victory in Texas he had won with the fewest career starts (12) previously held by Dale Sr.In may of his ROOKIE season he won 3 of the 5 events and finished no less than 10th. He won 3 races in 20003 Races in 2001 including the much publicized Daytona win, the first race post 9/11 and a victory in the fall Talladega raceIn 2002 he struggled with injury but still won 2 races that season (both at Talladega) 2003 he won 3 races again winning again both Talladega races and a race at Pheonix finishing 3rd in the standingsIn 2004 injuries again slowed him down due to his crash in Infenion in the sports cars where his car caught on fire. He still was able to win a career high of 6 races including the Daytona 500, Atlanta, Richmond, Bristol (which he became the first driver to sweep a race weekend at that track) Phoenix, and Talladega. He finished 5th in the standings, despite the injuries, and a 25 point penalty from the now infamous "that don't mean #$%$ line in victory lane following his win at Talladega. In 2005 it went down hill, why? Because Tony Sr. was taken off the pit box, he won only 1 race and finished 15th in the points.Keep in mind, he's also been running a race team since 2003, which even Kevin Harvick has ceased doing this season due to the distraction it causes. He has 18 wins in 11 seasons and averages a win every 23 races. He's won at Daytona, Talladega, Phoenix, Bristol, Charlotte, Atlanta, Chicago, Michigan, Dover and Richmond, there are legitimately 22 of the 36 races every season Dale Jr. can go in and be a regular threat to win (the 10 previous mentioned tracks which all hold 2 races a season and Martinsville which he's never won at but been a threat to win recently) 2003 and 2004 he easily could have won the championship and was a serious contender to do so. He's proven the ability to get to victory lane and has a strong chance for well over half the season, discussion over the guy can drive and has the ability to string together great runs here in his career and anyone who says otherwise just started following NASCAR in the last 3 years, isn't a NASCAR fan, or doesn't know the facts.

JR, raced real good last night,,best ive seen him drive in a long time,,he had a good shot to winning the shootout...but elbammo ended his night...Cant wait for Daytona!!
    • brian  •  Silver Spring, Maryland  •  2 months ago
none of the drivers, especially Juniors own teammates will help push him to the lead. It was so obvious in the Budweiser that Johnson did not want to help when Jr. was on the inside lane and Johnson backed off...that's how Jr. got caught up back there because no one wanted to help push him to the front near the end. The only way Jr. is gonna win is gonna win is either stay out front all day or lay back and come at the end.

"The King," Richard Petty, had a losing streak that lasted over 7 years. I'm out of here till Nadia comes back.
