2013 Budweiser Shootout eligibility requirements already set

No, you're not crazy, the 2012 Bud Shootout was just Saturday. But not a day after the checkered flag flew, NASCAR announced the eligibility rules for the 2013 Bud Shootout.

And for next year's race, what's old is new again.

From 1979-2008 the Budweiser Shootout — which started as the Busch Clash — was open to those drivers who had won a pole in the previous season or who had won a Budweiser Shootout and attempted a race in the previous season. Those rules will now be back in effect for 2013, meaning that the pole-winning car during Sunday's Daytona 500 qualifying will already be entered into next year's race assuming the pole winner isn't a former Shootout champion.

"Fans have expressed their desire to see this event return to its original eligibility rules," Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR senior VP of racing operations said in a release. "We listened and decided it would be best to return to the eligibility rules of years past adding further meaning to pole qualifying for each NASCAR Sprint Cup race."

The 2012 Bud Shootout was open to drivers in the top 25 in points in 2011 and drivers who had won a race at Daytona.

18 drivers won a pole award last year. Drivers already eligible for the 2013 race will be Kyle Busch, Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Denny Hamlin, Mark Martin, Kurt Busch, Jeff Gordon, Bill Elliott, Terry Labonte and Geoffrey Bodine.

They changed the format because Coors didn't want their Coors Pole Award to be affiliated with the Budweiser Shootout (or vise versa, Bud didn't want to have anything to do with Coors, I don't remember which scenario it was), given that the two beer companies are rivals. Is Coors done as official sponsor of the Coors Pole Award after this season? As we all know, sponsors make the NASCAR world go around.

What happens if a driver loses this years ride at the end of the season and is unable to get a ride or has one but that ride/points are sold to another team??

Rusty, Coors still sponsors the Pole Award as seen this past Sunday at the Daytona 500 Qualifier. Carl Edwards won the Pole and with a Coors Model, they stuck the Coors Pole Award Decal on the side of his car together for photograph purposes.

I know Coors is still the sponsor this year Jimmy. However I am talking about 2013 seeing as this article is about the 2013 Shootout. Hence my question "Is Coors done as official sponsor of the Coors Pole Award after this season?"

We can only hope that Geoff Bodine won't make a race this year.

NASCAM changes the rules to favor the top few teams and sponsors they favor. That's a fact. I could almost say this may be a good year for Ford but they will struggle. NASCAM favors Gubamint Motors. Always has. I bet if they held qualifying a day before the Daytona 500 Ford would do a lot better. GM and NASCAM have an entire week to figure out how to pick up speed on the Fords up front.

I wtched up until the first wreck and turned it off. Same old scam. I saw the video of #$%$ Smoke putting Kurt Busch in the wall. They said it was not deliberate. #$%$ #$%$ #$%$ #$%$ Yes, IT WAS. #$%$ knows that team does not have that many cars they can afford to have one destroyed. Jest another favored son of NASCAM that is allowed to wreck people and NASCAM looks the other way. Look at the 48. Caught cheating again. Well, apparently NASCAM could not sweep it under the rug. And what will they do? Nobody knows but one thing I do know. If it were a lesser team the penalties would have already been handed down and they would have been severe. Boycott NASCAM. Boycott GM. Vote Republican. Buy Ford.
