The worlds of MMA and porn collide

What is it about MMA that attracts the pornographic world? Yesterday, my colleague Steve Cofield posted a picture of Kimbo Slice wearing a MILF Hunter shirt. (If you don't know what that is, the search you are about to do will be NSFW.) In addition to being a streetfighter, Slice spent his pre-MMA days serving as a security man for pornography shoots. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou said in a recent interview that if he wasn't a fighter, he would be a porn star. And of course, MMA star Tito Ortiz is expecting twins with the biggest porn star of all, Ms. Jenna Jameson.

So what is it about MMA that attracts the sex industry? Sex and violence both sell, so maybe money attracts money. However, I don't think that MMA is any more violent than football, and I don't see Katie Morgan hanging out on the sidelines at Soldier Field.

More than anything, I think it's the bad-boy, subversive reputation of MMA. Just like pornography and the mainstream film industry, MMA is outside the normal sports industry, even though it makes boatloads of money. Also, both industries use California and Las Vegas as their hubs. Fighters and porn stars could only avoid each other at Tao for so long, right?

The good news for fighters is that their connections to pornography may provide a little job security if MMA suddenly went south. Porn is a recession-proof industry, and Slice and friends could always go back to providing security. And like Rich Franklin and Randy Couture before him, Soko could fulfull his dream of appearing on film, albeit a very different film than Franklin and Couture starred in.
