Mike Whitehead won a light heavyweight bout over Kevin Randleman via a 29-28 unanimous decision. Randleman, a ball of energy before the fight, could not overcome Whitehead's wrestling for the first two rounds.
Much of the fight was a wrestling match between two former NCAA All-Americans. Early in the first, Randleman took Whitehead down, but Whitehead escaped using "Funk," a wrestling technique made popular by his University of Missouri teammate, Olympian Ben Askren. Randleman, too, escaped using classic wrestling techniques, from Whitehead's side control and ground and pound.
In the second round, Whitehead outwrestled Randleman, finally letting him up with just over a minute in the round. Randleman came out in the third with much more energy, dropping Whitehead and nearly finishing. Unfortunately for "The Monster," Whitehead escaped, and the fight went to the scorecards.
This was Randleman's first fight in over a year. Ring rust didn't appear to be a factor as much as Whitehead's strong wrestling.
