UFC on Fuel TV 1 postfight: Dana White hammers himself and the NSAC

White at a recent press conference (Cagewriter)Dana White always says what's on his mind. He's not afraid to call someone out even if it's himself.

Seconds after Jake Ellenberger crawled across the finish line to win his three-round fight against Diego Sanchez, fans began asking "what happened to all UFC main events being five rounds?"

Fuel TV's Ariel Helwani asked White.

"Because we blew it. It should've been a five round fight. [...] I'm looking at the fight going ... 'yeah, this should've been five rounds.' I think that when Diego and Ellenberger went back in there for that fourth the place would've went crazy. People were ready for it at home," said White.

White wouldn't name names. He took the blame. He confirmed it was not Fuel TV's decision. More importantly, he said all main events will be five rounders. Back in June, White announced that would be the case for all main events. Somehow this fight slipped through the cracks.

A disappointed Sanchez finds out he lost and there's no fourth or fifth round (Getty))

White also commented on the latest with Nick Diaz's likely suspension coming from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. He knows Diaz will probably get pounded and he has little problem with that.

"How about the Nevada State Athletic Commission royally kissed Floyd Mayweather's ass when he walked in there. This guy is going to jail," White said. "The judge is allowing him to not go to jail until he has his fight. Right?"

It still annoys White that Chael Sonnen was denied a license by the state to coach on "The Ultimate Fighter." Meanwhile, Floyd Mayweather facing jail time had his jail arrival delayed and got a license from the commission to fight on May 5.

"You know how much money we bring into Las Vegas every year with the fights that we put on? You know how much we contribute to the city of Las Vegas? Do you think for a second if we had a fighter that was going to go to jail that the athletic commission would license him to fight so that the fight could go on? There's no way in hell," White said. "Am I the only guy on this [expletive] planet who thinks that's crazy? Seriously. It just blows my mind."

White was very complimentary of the effort turned in by Sanchez calling him a professional. When asked about the right weight class for Sanchez, White said he can fight anywhere he wants.

The hairy Herman was effective in the opening round (Getty)

He wasn't so complimentary of Dave Herman. A chiseled, athletic heavyweight, Herman fought well in the first round but lacked focus to stick with a gameplan against Stefan Struve. The 6-foot-11 Struve eventually used his length and effective combinations to put Herman away. White didn't rip Herman's performance, but criticized his prefight antics.

"I like Dave Herman. The stuff that he pulled this week? I can't stand that stuff," White told Fuel TV.

That stuff was Herman growing a huge beard and then dying his beard and thick body hair all black. Not the biggest deal, but when you lose the way Herman did, it opens the door for the critics.

"Listen, if you want to get noticed ... get noticed for your fighting skills," White said. "Not for coming in like a gorilla or wearing pink scarfs. And coming in to "Macho Man?" As I was sitting there, I'm thinking 'did I seriously let him come into this song?'"

White said he's not anti-Village People, but he's not into the joking around.

Anyone who thinks Diego would have just as easily finished the fight in the 4th is crazy. Diego knew that was his last chance, and he poured all his energy into trying to finish the fight. He was every bit as tired as Ellenberger at the end of the 3rd.

IMO, the 4th and 5th (if necessary) would have been more counterpunching by Ellenberger.

You must not watch MMA enough to know that Diego's tank is like Guidas.

I can assure you that if that fight had lasted one more round Sanchez would've put Ellenberger away as he was really gassed.

Diego has good cardio, for sure...but he's only been past three rounds once, and he was a shell of himself in the 4th and 5th against Penn. (He was a shell of himself that entire fight, really.) Also, I think people are overstating how "gassed" Ellenberger was at the end of the third.

Unless Ellenberger's hand was really broken as Jon suggested, I see no reason the formula he had been using in the first and second and half of the third wouldn't have worked just as well in the 4th and 5th.

        Just my opinion.

Please yahoo bring back the boxing tab, I think that's why we get a lot of lost trolls in here, they can't seem to find their way over there, I mean is not like there's something important to talk about in the boxing blogs anyways, Oh wait.. How about the Argentinian riot..? that was something else, that would be the most exciting thing to happen in the boxing world this year, very sad.

Does anyone here remembers the "golden years of boxing".? What happened to it..?
      • tGW 3 months ago
I remember it; I have it on VHS.

They could partially fix boxing by unifying all the titles. Then guys couldn't duck each other if they wanted to be champ.
      • Dr. High 3 months ago
Boxers don't give a #$%$ about being "the champ" anymore. Boxers go for the money. Pacquiao, Mayweather and the second tier fighters that get abused by them...any of them could be champs. No one knows. And no one cares. They only want to see Mayweather and Pacquiao fight against each other or some can.

I wouldn't try to predict who would have won if it went 5 but both those guys are highly skilled warriors and it would have been awesome to see.
Glad Dana see's the error of his ways and will definitely make sure all main events go 5.

I can't think of too many fights that have done the full 5 rounds, that have been all that exciting. Both fighters were pacing themselves to go three rounds. You can't make the conclusion that they would have continued that pace for another two. More likely, the first three rounds would be fought at a slower pace, to make sure they have the energy for the last two.

I don't think either guy looked like he could go two more rounds... Maybe if they knew it was a 5 rounder they'd have been ready for it but... both looked like they had had enough in my opinion.... just sayin..

ellenberger crawled across the finish line? little dramatic there, don't you think? 5 rounds or not, ellenberger was going to win this fight. i think he was always one step ahead of diego the entire fight. i like diego though.
      • Dr. High 3 months ago
Would have been interesting to see Ellenberger try to survive 10 more minutes of relentless ground and pound with blood dripping into his eyes and a broken right hand. You SURE he would have won anyway?
      • numberseven 3 months ago
10 more minutes of relentless ground and pound? well now i guess you are assuming that is the way the fight would play out....in ten more minutes anything could have happened....sure, we can say that until we're blue in the face. i don't believe so though. ellenberger would have won in 5 too. just my opinion.
      • The Unsilent Majority 3 months ago
Depends on how much of his gas tank Sanchez blew on the flurry at the end of Round 3. If he came out "fresh" for Round 4, Ellenberger was moving very slowly in Round 3. In any case, it's a moot point, Ellenberger won.

I watched this event yesterday (unlike Ms. Hendricks) and yes, it would have been amazing if it was 5 rounds. but don't play it off like a bigger deal than it is.

      1) both fighters knew it was only 3 rounds, they signed the contracts months ago, that said it was only going to be 3 rounds, and the UFC knew it too, its not like they decided last night

      2) don't make Dana White out to be this altruistic sentient being. he's a hypocrite who rarely atones for the times when most people feel he is blatantly in the wrong. again in regards to my first point, Dana knew it was only 3 rounds

If Herman won this fight that is all people would be talking about and how great it is for his persona and how MMA needs colorful personalities like him... You're all female cleansing bags.

With the pre-show and post fight shows it sure wasn't because they didn't have the time. White is not the great hands on leader he thinks he is. He is busy getting all buffed or more precisely puffed up.

I watched the main event and by the end of the third round you felt like there was alot left to be done in the cage by both fighters. I had scored the fight 10-9 in the first Ellenberger. Then 10-9 in the second Ellenburger. Then 10-8 Sanchez in the third. It was a very close fight by the end of the third. I can see the judges scoring that third round a 10-9 for Sanchez and giving the split to Ellenberger but Im not convinced he would have won that fight had it gone on another two rounds. White is right, it should have been a 5 Rounder.
      • srsly 3 months ago
Gerald, Rd 3 def not 10-8.. just saying..
      • The Unsilent Majority 3 months ago
Definitely not. Sanchez teed off in the last minute but Ellenberger was competitive the whole rest of the round and pulled off a reversal before the end of the round. 10-9 Sanchez was spot on.
      • Rob R 3 months ago
If the third was 10-8 Sanchez, then the first two were 10-8 Ellenberger. Ellenberger won the first two rounds from bell to bell. Sanchez stole the third with his offense at the end of the round.

Was he in a really dominant position? Sure. Would he have finished the fight if there was another minute or two in the round? Probably...just like Ellenberger was well on his way to finishing Diego in the second. Doesn't mean it was a 10-8 round.

White has done nothing for adult amateur baseball in Vegas
and were the worst in the nation with potential to be the envy
of the entire men adult baseball organizations. and its' very SAD that he hasn't
built fields that can be played on 7 days a week. Players of the leauge are just fed up
with him and tell me he's just the stingiest man in town so we should just forget
      about it.

UFC on Fuel averaged 217K viewers over 3 hours. LMFAO... Spike is laughing. Dana and Zuffa can't get out of their own way. As I said, this trend is dying. On FX you get outdone by reruns of CSI on a slow Saturday night.. End of story....
    • OGNutcracker  •  3 months ago
Too bad no one could watch this garbage as it was on Fuel.. A network with 1/4 the household penetration of Spike. Fox brass saw how poorly the UFC was doing, getting beat by reruns of CSI on Saturday Nights, so they throw it on a Wednesday.. Effing comical.

      Let Diaz fight!!!
    • OGNutcracker  •  3 months ago
Not many people got to see this stank card because Fuel has 1/4 the household penetration Spike did. Dana says it is all a part of the plan. Since when is a demotion part of the plan?? When Fox brass saw CSI reruns beating UFC on FX, down to Fuel you go.
    • OGNutcracker  •  3 months ago
And who cares what music this guy came out to?? This sport is a joke and resembles the WWE anyways. Tough Man comps in a cage. How creative. Cofield is just a UFC Nutlicker and Boxing reject.. I make money off shorting Yahoo! stock because I see first hand the garbage it is.
    • OGNutcracker  •  3 months ago
And if you don't believe me, just ask Smoove when i told him to short RIMM at $60.. It is now in the $15 range. Made a fortune on that short. Yahoo! can't go much lower, but I always short this ugly cow at $17.. It is a lock on profit.. You're welcome...
