Tabbed No. 1 welterweight prospect, Jake Ellenberger sounds pretty confident about upcoming fight

If Jake Ellenberger isn't fighting for some sort of UFC welterweight title by the end of 2012 he can only blame himself.

The 26-year-old has put himself in prime position and can lock up a title fight if he posts something impressive next week against Diego Sanchez at UFC on FUEL in Omaha, NE.

At minus-350, Ellenberger is a huge favorite against the veteran fighter. He thinks he'll win but Ellenberger respects what Sanchez has done.

"I'm going to expect the best Diego Sanchez. He's going to come after me. He's going to move froward like he always does," Ellenberger told "The MMA Insiders" on ESPN1100/98.9 FM. "He trains with a great camp, a great strategist. I'm preparing for the best Diego yet."

Sanchez is back working with Greg Jackson and Jackson's MMA. That's a good thing. But the recent wars and beatings Sanchez (23-4, 12.4 UFC) has put his body through probably isn't.

"He's somewhat predictable. He moves forward. I think I can definitely win the transitions and win in the striking area," said Ellenberger.

Ellenberger's game is perfectly suited to challenge the two UFC welterweight champions. That's ESPN's MMA expert Adam Hill named him the top prospect at 170 pounds (parameters include - Have not held a UFC belt in the weight class; have not previously fought for a title in the weight class).

Carlos Condit and Ellenberger met in Sept. of 2009. The current UFC interim welterweight champ took a narrow split decision from Ellenberger. At the time, some may have thought it was a fluke. Not the case since Ellenberger has reeled off five straight victories including four KO finishes. I'd put Rory MacDonald and Johny Hendricks ahead of Ellenberger on the 170 list, but it's obvious the ranks of challengers for both UFC titles is growing each month.

Adam Hill Top 10 welterweight prospects:

    1. Jake Ellenberger
    2. Rory MacDonald
    3. Johny Hendricks
    4. Erick Silva
    5. Tyron Woodley
    6. Ben Askren
    7. Martin Kampmann
    8. Douglas Lima
    9. Jordan Mein
    10. Siyar Bahadurzada

Kampmann should be ahead of woodley. all Woodley does is hug/spoon people for fifteen minutes

New ranking invention? What's a prospect ?..Is that a cross between a contender and pretender?..Kampmann is a veteran. Rory could whup the lot of those clowns..all in one night.

I have a shocking prediction. Deigo has been humble and Ellenberger has been hanging around with the likes of Tito (need I say more). Ellenberger should smash Deigo but I think Deigo has a trick up his sleeve. Deigo will take a punch, pretend hurt, fall to the ground, the dumb rastler will jump on him, and Deigo will triangle him (or armbar). I predict he will take a page out of the old Verdun playbook.

If you are going to make a list of the top 10 guys in a weight class, what is the point of an irrelevant exception clause "(parameters include - Have not held a UFC belt in the weight class; have not previously fought for a title in the weight class)---SIC??? The list should include the top 10 guys, period. Kos, Fitch, Alves, etc. should be given their proper ranking since they are obviously within the top 10. It is irrelevant that they have fought for the title before. If, for example, a bout between Erick Silva and Kos took place and Silva lost, then he would be knocked backwards in terms of his place to fight the champ. Silva's (hypothetical) loss would not be discounted just because Kos did not beat GSP.

Jake may be the number 1 prospect, but with the whole GSP-Diaz-Condit mess, I somehow doubt he'll be fighting for the belt in 2012. Good luck to him though, he is a beast!! I hope Condit takes the belt from GSP, then has a rematch with Ellenberger for the belt...As for Hendricks and MacDonald being ahead of Ellenberger, I don't see it. He has more wins against tougher competition (not to say that the other two aren't worthy prospects).

Diaz is no longer part of the mess. He'll be gone for a year, seeya in 2013 Nick.

it doesnt matter who wins between jake and diego cuz neither of them will ever hold the belt. i could see condit beating GSP but Rory Macdonald is the future of the 170 pound division

"He's going to move froward like he always does," guess spell check didnt catch "froward."

Lol. What, you've never moved froward?

Diego's "win" against Kampmann was a fluke. This was exactly why Condit should have (and did) win the Diaz fight. Walking away with a face that looks like raw hamburger meat isn't a good argument for giving the win to the guy that "pushes forward".Let me spell it out:THIS IS A FIGHT.D A M A G E should be THE leading factor in a decision. Not "aggression and octagon (cage) control"! You only resort to those criteria if there wasn't enough obvious damage to make the decision based on that alone. Next in line behind damage should be strikes landed, then strikes thrown and submission attempts, and finally at last place "cage control", i.e. pushing a fighter backward or controlling the center of the octagon. If a fighter runs TOWARD his opponent at 60mph and throws 100 bombs, he isn't winning the fight if the other guy falls backward and lands on his #$%$ but manages to break the "aggressor's" nose, jaw, orbital bone, etc. and send him to the hospital afterward.Other examples include Penn-GSP #1, Machida-Rua #1, etc.

Look Tyron Woodley is probaly a nice man but he is a HORRIFICALLY boring fighter and he basically lost his last fight because he looked scared to actually fight. He won a hugging match with a guy who clearly came to FIGHT but couldnt overcome the scared wet blanket approach Woodley used. Its a sad testament to the sport that the judges reward that nonsense. Its the antithisis of what FIGHTING is all about.

I dont have proof and quite honestly Im not a journalist so I dont have to. Im a private citizen, but as a long time semi-pro athlete whos been around athletes and gyms his whole life Ellenberger looks juiced out of his mind. I will def be pulling for the Diego in this one. Score one for the human non-synthetic athletes buddy.

LOL The interview of Josh Koscheck being interviewed by Ariel Helwani where he refers to "Jake Ingleberger" and when corrected by Ariel, Josh responds "Yeah, whatever". Love that!

Kampmann's experience alone should put him higher, IMHO. Good list though.

(parameters include - Have not held a UFC belt in the weight class; have not previously fought for a title in the weight class). This does not make sense. Ben Askren has fought for, and won, a title in the weight class (current Bellator WW champ) but not in the UFC. So.....

Nice list Cofield. A veritable who's who of who cares.

THE Diego Sanchez?? Who ducks his head, closes his eyes and then throws punches?? If any MMA dingalings knew how to box, guys like Sanchez would be non factors. A simple step back and counter punch and it is good night Sanchez.
      • Doghouse Riley 3 months ago
You and I have always agreed that Sanchez is a hack. He mistakes ugly faces and screaming for productive aggression. His striking is so awful it makes me sick to watch--way worse than windmill Wandy. I've never understood why so many people tout him as an elite fighter. He gets owned when he faces top talent. His indecisiveness in respect to his "proper" weight-class is evidence of his meandering and lack of confidence within the upper echelons of both the WW and the LW divisions. The guy also seems to have a screw loose.

I'm going with Diego in this one. Jake is good and even though I am not a Diego fan...I just see him winning this one. I'll happily be wrong, won't care...but my pick is Diego.

So all you fanboys who say MMA is 'harder' coz there is different disciplines than just one take it up with a guy who is in the P4P debate in Cruz, who clowns the boxing in MMA and says Boxing is harder than MMA, not easier. Cofield, why no blogs on that interview??/
      • Beckham 3 months ago
cruz has only been in mma for a few years and plus, there are like 50 or more guys who have better boxing than cruz. and boxing is so much easier because you have to worry about a bunch of different things. give me one good reason why boxing is harder than mma

Charlie "The Spaniard" Brenneman beat Rick Story, who's beaten Jonny Hendricks, Jake Ellenberger and Thiago Alves... He's the best welterweight in the UFC and GSP knows this
    • OGNutcracker  •  3 months ago
Even D. Cruz was bashing the 'Boxing' in MMA and said the quality of fighting really hasn't improved much in the last 10 years. That he prefers to watch Boxing, never watches MMA and that Boxing is actually harder than MMA.. Don't believe me, YouTube it fanboys.
