In a fight that was expected to go the distance, Jake Shields submitted Robbie Lawler in 2:02 during the Strikeforce main event on Saturday night in St. Louis. After trading blows on their feet, Shields attempted a takedown but it didn't last. After that, Shields pulled guard and caught Lawler with a deep, deep guillotine, and Lawler tapped out.

Lawler, fighting in his hometown, was clearly disappointed after the loss. The two were fighting at a catchweight of 182 lbs., with Shields normally fights at welterweight moving up, and Lawler, a middleweight, moving down. At the postfight press conference, Lawler said that he wanted to slam Shields, but couldn't shake him loose. Even Phil Baroni piped in to say that Shields had guillotined Baroni many times in practice, and he would either "blackout or tap out."

This is now Shields 12th win in a row. After the fight, Shields said that he wants the middleweight belt which currently belongs to Cung Le. He doesn't foresee a fight with Joe Riggs, as "he wouldn't give Riggs the time of day," despite his convincing win over Phil Baroni. However, Le told Cagewriter that an interim belt would soon be awarded as Le takes a break from fighting to focus on his film career. Will Shields get that belt? We will soon find out.
