The additions from EliteXC to the Strikeforce roster make for an interesting side story to Saturday's event featuring Nick Diaz and Frank Shamrock. Several of the fighters are coming off long layoffs after being in limbo because of EliteXC's contracts. Scott Smith is one of the guys moving over. He got to fight twice on CBS and was ready to fight again in November. That didn't happen as EliteXC folded in late October.
The first guy to hint that Smith's November fight might be screwed was his father. Moments after Kimbo Slice was knocked out by Seth Petruzelli, Smith's pop said, "Well hopefully your fight happens'. Smith says it wasn't Kimbo alone who pushed EliteXC over that final cliff, throw some blame Petruzelli's way. Smith couldn't believe "The Silverback" went on Orlando radio and suggested that his fight was fixed. Smith thinks Petruzelli should be an outsider for many promotions:
"What a knucklehead," Smith told Cage Writer. "Who's going to want to pick him up and put any money in him. I don't think Strikeforce would. I wouldn't hire the guy to fight for me saying that kind of stuff behind their back."
Watch Smith with Cage Writer:
Smith was the first EliteXC fighter to get a fight on a Strikeforce card back in November. He beat Terry Martin. He's got a tough test against Benji Radach (19-4) tomorrow night. Expect some fireworks, the two have combined for 27 knockouts (TKOs) in 33 wins.
