Robbie Lawler shocked the world with a career resurgence in 2013 and 2014. The American Top Team welterweight strung together three consecutive wins before narrowly losing the UFC 170 pound title to Johny Hendricks in an epic fight this past March.
Don't count Lawler's UFC 173 opponent Jake Ellenberger as one of those impressed, however. "I think that's been a little bit overblown," Ellenberger told reporters this week of Lawler's recent tear.
"You beat a guy like Bobby Voelker, a few guys who were not top 10 guys, he had an impressive win over Koscheck, who also hadn't had a big win in a really long time."
Well, alright. We suppose that it isn't too surprising that Ellenberger is trying hard not to be in awe of Lawler, considering the fact that they will face-off Saturday. That said, the Nebraska fighter admits that this fight is the most important of his career.
"Every fight's important, but this is the most important fight by far," Ellenberger said.
"I'm getting an opportunity to fight the No. 1 [contender] in the world, it couldn't be bettter. For me, it's definitely a pretty big fight. It's going to get me closer to the gold."
