Plenty of outrage over Diaz-Condit decision, winner defends his approach

Defense is an underrated aspect of mixed martial arts. That's unless you're a judge.

Carlos Condit picked his spots and had Nick Diaz whiffing with his punches for much of the night at UFC 143. His strategy and executed resonated with the judges, who scored it 4-1, 4-1 and 3-2 in favor of the new UFC interim welterweight champ. But Condit's ring generalship didn't go over well with many fans.

Here's sampling of tweets from fights fans who thought Condit simply ran the entire night.

Condit didn't see it that way.

"I was pretty confident that I had won the fight. I landed a lot of effective strikes. I stuck to my gameplan. I did what I went in there to do. I punched him in the face. Kicked him in the face. You know, landed more effective strikes than he did in the fight," Condit said. "That's what it boiled down to. If I sat there and fought Nick Diaz's fight, it'd probably be him sitting here with this belt instead of me."

    UFC president Dana White agreed.

"The fans are mad about the way Carlos Condit fought ... too [expletive bad]. You're mad at the way he fought? He went in there and he fought a great fight," White said. "He stuck to his gameplan. Nick Diaz is the master of getting you to fight his fight. [...] Carlos Condit kept his cool tonight. He fought a perfect fight."

Condit said when did Diaz did catch him, the shots were weak.

"They weren't all that effective. For the most part, if he did hit me with anything, it was kind of past the power zone. They didn't have a lot on them," said Condit.

Condit thought his kicks paid dividends later in the fight.

"Chopping his legs and affecting his mobility from the very start was working," Condit said. "You don't see the effects of that until later on in the fight. But he stopped coming forward on me."

As Diaz began to talk trash, Condit also stayed under control. He recalled one funny line when Diaz responded to one of the 10-plus spinning backfists and elbows that Condit threw his way.

"We're throwing spinning [expletive] now?," Condit said repeating what Diaz said in the cage. Condit wasn't about to play Diaz's mind games.

"I planned for that. I knew that I to be mentally prepared as well as physically prepared to face Nick Diaz," Condit said. "That's something I had in my mindset as well as the talking and the taunts and stuff. I just needed to stay focused and execute my gameplan. No matter what he said or no matter how many punches he took from me, I couldn't let my focus stray."

What's next for Condit is anyone's guess. The fighter and promotion were non-committal on when he gets back in the Octagon. The champ Georges St-Pierre is hoping for a November return from ACL surgery. Nine months is a long time for the top of the 170-pound division to stay dormant.

Condit fought a GREAT fight. The point of fighting is to defend without getting hurt in hopefully the shortest amount of time, REAL fighters know this. Brawlers end up suffering from body and brain damage.

Interesting. Diaz wanted a full-out brawl because that plays best to his strengths. Basically, I see a lot of people that are saying that because Diaz's style is to brawl, if someone else refuses to brawl, then Diaz should automatically be the winner? He should be awarded "aggression" points purely because he is coming forward. And here I thought that skill and execution also mattered and that this was an athletic contest rather than a street fight. Since when is not playing to your opponent's strengths a bad thing? It is Diaz's job to catch Condit and punish him. I do not want to get to Olympic boxing rules where a three pitty-pat punches outscore one destructive punch. But I also do not need to see two guys charge straight at each other and just fling as many punches and kicks as possible until somebody is KTFO either. If that's what the "sport" is, then it is not a sport. It's just human #$%$fighting. Put em in an 8 foot ring. Deduct a point anytime someone grapples or takes a step back. Eliminate rounds and rest periods. Loser is guy that gets knocked out. If you want barbaric, then go get your barbaric.in the meantime, I'd prefer to watch a sport where there is both aggression and strategy....and the idea of not getting hit, while your opponent does get hit.....remains a viable strategy.

the art of combat sports is to strike and defeat your oppenent while trying not to let him do it to you. same with martial arts.. i have watched and been a fan of boxing for 32yrs and mma for 10yrs. their goal is not rockem soxem robots its mentally and physically beat your opponent. nothing wrong with the scoring, just a lot of crying cause your guy got beat same as him, the poorest sport in the business. let him retire. so he was a champion in strike force, he came over cause the best talent in the world is in the ufc. he just isnt the top guy here nor do i honestly think he is near the top 10. the bottom half maybe. dana should have mage him earn it and fight top guys first not someone who quit on himself after edgar.i thought it was 2 even rounds 3 for condit, diaz never adjusted nor did his corner which makes you wonder could he or do they not challenge him to do so.

Too bad that Condit has to deal with this rediculous BS. I hope he has enough people around him telling him how well he did. Unfortunately negative criticism gets more at tension than acolades.

Actually, Diaz is an awesome fighter. The only reason he went to Strikeforce was weed and I think he got into it with Dana. When he was in the UFC before, he was definitely in the upper echelon and still is. But the whining has to stop. Condit clearly won. Honestly, I was kind of disappointed that Condit was more fired up for this fight. We've seen him fight mad before and he's a bad dude. I can't imagine why Diaz' trash talking wasn't #$%$ him off. I guess marriage and being a dad will chill you out a little bit...

I agree Condit won the fight. Was it a bit boring/disappointing to watch as a fan? Yes. Still hats off to Condit for winning, and yeah you gotta wonder why Diaz didn't adjust (unless he truly felt he was winning the fight, which I think was the case). @Boston, not sure what basis there is for saying Diaz is not a top10 contender in welterweight, and to go so far as to say he is maybe in the bottom half is just ridiculous, and I think pretty indicative that you don't like the guy.

It hasn't been stressed enough. If you want to win, do not leave it in the hands of the judges. People are saying that Condit ran, well, Diaz didn't hit hard enough to make the bout his.

Do not leave it in the hands of the judges.

best comment i have read today. we say it all thetime dont leave it in the hands of the judges.

Everyone is angry because we didnt see the brawl we expected. TOO BAD. Why dont you remember they are fighting for not only themselves but to support those they take care of. I wanted to see GSP vs. Condit in the first place. Diaz was just riding on the hype. Look at his last couple of opponents..all wanted to stand and fight against someone more superior. Condit came in with the perfect mindset..and gameplan, Get over it, Diaz is a little cry baby when things dont go his way. Maybe he should've missed those flights.
      • DanielB 3 months ago
Does that mean Dan Henderson, Mark Munoz, Jake Ellenberger, Joe Rogan and the rest of the UFC fighters who thought Diaz won are cry babies too?

Condit outsmarted him. If Diaz was tired of him running them take him to the ground where he can't. If he would have used his brain instead of his mouth (and mary jane) he would have changed his strategy to counter. He is the better puncher but not the better fighter. Those upset want to take away all strategy. He just wants to stand and trade punches, go into boxing or bare knuckle alley fights. Look at his face man, he took alot of punches, if they weren't hard why's it look like that?
      • Robbie 3 months ago
Well...it's ironic you'd say that. I just read an article that said he got busted after the pee test for the Mary Jane. So he'll face suspension.

Condit won that fight hands down. Yes, he was backing up and tagging Diaz the whole time. Has anyone ever heard of Chuck Liddel? He made his career off counter punching. Condit out boxed Diaz and it's a simple as that. Wether you connect coming forward or moving backwards, it's about effective striking and Condit was the winner. I'm a Diaz fan before a Condit fan, but Diaz was out boxed. Plain and simple. Diaz isn't retiring. He'll be back. He has said that before.

Who else will pay $49 to watch them dance in the MMA?
    • Jason  •  3 months ago
I think it is hysterical that all of these Diaz fanboys are saying Condit ran away. Diaz had very little offense until the 5th round and Condit hit him with more strikes and obviously inflicted more damage. So if you are saying Condit ran and STILL made Diaz's face look the way he did, imagine if he stood and traded with Diaz.....He would have KO'd Diaz instead.

just saw the fight and in my opinion Diaz did not win a single round - not even that close - his face looked like hamburger after it was all over
    • Buck  •  3 months ago
Condit won the fight hands down. He had a plan, stuck to it, and out-punched Diaz all night long. Diaz was frustrated that he could not hit Condit, and it showed...tried to get some creds by dropping his guard and taunting Condit but no dice...
    • Overcome  •  3 months ago
Like I said Condit won get over it! Now Diaz tests positive for MJ??? What a fool. Seriously. a FOOL! But then.... we all knew that.
    • TheCaptain19  •  Elmhurst, Illinois  •  3 months ago
Diaz needs to stop crying....and lay off the pipe. Why is Condit getting all of this crap for running when Frankie Edgar is praised for the same approach? Dominic Cruz also come to mind. Diaz should have been even more aggressive and maybe taken a bit more risk to land on Carlos. Even I can hit a heavybag. It's a little tougher when they're not standing right in front of you. Who cares is you're the fighter moving forward if you can't land anything and are getting picked apart?

Point fighting lameness just like GSP, prepare for the most boring belt fight EVER.
    • Oliver  •  3 months ago
      Outplayed. Condit wins.
    • 2centsworth  •  Toronto, Canada  •  3 months ago
So let me get this straight: GSP defends his belt by winning every round and every fight and gets called a pussy because he didn't knock anyone out but I don't hear anyone lamenting the lack of punch out power of Diaz or Condit.
    • DB  •  3 months ago
We all know why Diaz said he was retiring now. Another Positive drug test keeps him banned for a year. Enough of this drug head. Go to Japan. We know you can't make it as a boxer. They do drug tests too.

      Condit won. Get over it.
    • KenM  •  Seattle, Washington  •  3 months ago
So all it takes in the minds of everyone, is to throw up your arms and act tough? That's all I saw the whiner Nick Diaz do the whole fight. If Nick the (whiner) could beat Condit, why didn't he ? All Diaz wants to do is throw punches and overwhelm his opponent with in your face crap!!!
