Alistair Overeem defended his Strikeforce belt at Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery in St. Louis tonight, TKO'ing Brett Rogers in the first round.
Overeem landed the first strike and then took the fight to the ground, controlling Rogers. He rained down strikes as Rogers turtled up. Referee John McCarty put a stop to the beating at 3:40 in the first round.
This is Overeem's first defense of his Strikeforce heavyweight belt since he won the belt in late 2007. He has fought several times, both kickboxing and MMA matches, since winning, but not a Strikeforce bout.
"It's been a while, but I'm back, and I'm not going nowhere," Overeem said after the fight. "I was in the best shape of my life."
After the bout, Strikeforce commentator Gus Johnson asked Overeem who he wanted to fight next, and Overeem answered Fedor Emelianenko. Emelianenko is under contract with Strikeforce, but his next bout is scheduled with Fabricio Werdum in June.
Since blasting his way onto the scene with 10 wins in a row, Rogers has fallen prey to both Fedor Emelianenko and Overeem.
