Yushin Okami won a split decision over Mark Munoz at UFC on Versus 2 in San Diego, taking the judges cards 29-28, 28-29, 29-28.
After a few minutes in the first round of feeling out his distance with Okami, Munoz took Okami down. He wasn't able to do much with that takedown, and he took a few punches while feeling Okami out. Though the round was light in action, Okami likely took it.
Munoz became more comfortable in the second round and let his hands go. He clipped Okami several times, and finished the round with a takedown.
Going into the final round, it appeared that the winner of the round would win the fight. Munoz tried to return to his wrestling roots and take Okami down, but Okami showed excellent defense, sprawling and stuffing Munoz's takedown attempts.
Okami, who was controlled by middleweight title contender Chael Sonnen in their bout last fall, defended himself well against Munoz, a Division I champion wrestler for Oklahoma State. He also rocked Munoz with a few strikes throughout the bout.
Okami's 2010 is already shaping up much better than his 2009. This year, he has wins over Lucio Linhares and Munoz, while in 2009, he lost to Sonnen and battled injuries.
