Mark Hunt takes out Cheick Kongo in the first round at UFC 144

    (Tracy Lee)

Mark Hunt made his name in combat sports in Japan, as he was a well-known and credentialed kickboxer. He thanked the Japanese fans with a quick knockout of Cheick Kongo at UFC 144.

The two tentatively felt each other out, but when Kongo came inside, Hunt met him with a huge left that sent Kongo flying. Kongo returned to his feet, then Hunt threw a right-left combo that wobbled his opponent. He followed it with uppercuts until Kongo's legs fell out from underneath him. The bout was stopped at 2:11 in the first round.

At 37 years old, Hunt now has three straight wins in the UFC and an overall record of 8-7. For Kongo, this loss stops him from getting a three-fight win streak.

All the Mark Hunt haters need to suck it. Seriously, suck it. This guy is awesome. He doesn't waste time with trash talk or some huge ego. He plods forward an knocks people out. What is wrong with that?

Where are all the tools b4 the fight asking why Kongo was getting an easy opponent? If you have followed MMA you would know who Hunt was & how good he is. Great win & glad to see he won. Also, glad to see Dana kept him around. He might not be a contender for the belt, but you always get a good fight with him.

He was 5-7 before he fought for the ufc (on a contact technicality. PRIDE had a tendency to gurantee fights to fighters, which is why so many of them would keep fighting dispite have poor records, So When UFC bought PRIDE and the contracts, they had to either give Hunt a fight or pay him not to fight, they chose the former)

Um you are wrong MJ. PRIDE kept guys around because Japanese fans don't care about fighting records like people in North America do. They wanted exciting guys that can finish a fight without the fear of having to have a winning record to keep the fans happy. Case in point, GSP. He's so worried focused on strategy to eak out a win, rather than put on a good fight win or lose. Japan is is all about the show & fight, not all about the winner.

I wanna see Pat Berry vs. Mark Hunt and Kongo vs. Roy Nelson
      • Doghouse Riley 2 months ago
I'd go with Hunt and Nelson. Kongo will never KO Roy, but a "kind of" in shape Roy could make trouble for Kongo on the ground or standing. And Hunt is way too good to get caught by Pat. I also doubt Pat could KO Iron Mark Hunt.

Come to think of it: I'd like to see Hunt and Nelson. I'd go with Hunt. Arlovski KOed Nelson. So he does not have an unstoppable chin.

Its all aboUt match ups, styles make fights and if they put Hunt in there with de Los Santos, I wouldn't be surprised if Hunt ended up champ.

I agree Boss...If you put him against Dos Santos that is a stand and bang clinic if I ever did see one.
      • Truth is the Devil 2 months ago
I agree about the styles making fight but Santos is not a good example. Santos would beat the living hell out of Hunt?
      • Ricky 2 months ago
@Truth I am not naive enough to think Mark Hunt would destroy Dos Santos by any means, however I don't think Dos Santos would beat the hell out of Mark Hunt either. Dos Santos couldn't put away an overweight and sluggish Big Country. There is not a chance in hell he would put away Mark Hunt. The man has taken a left head kick from Crop Cop in his prime and shrugged it off as it ws nothing. The man has a granite head let alone chin. Not to mention his hands are pure steel. It would be one hell of a fight. But I would serious put my money on Mark Hunt to knock out Dos Santos then vice versa... but that is only if Dos Santos was dumb enough to just stand and bang the whole time.

I wish he'd switch his name to Mike Hunt. I'd love to hear Bruce Buffer shout, "It's time for Mike Hunt!"

If they keep putting Hunt in there with pure strikers and guys that just want to bang he can get some wins. As soon as Hunt goes up against a wrestler or BJJ fighter he'll be in trouble.

Hunt is a good middle of the card guy fighting against other strikers. He same some entertainment value. No real threat for a belt, but entertaining nonetheless.

if hunt would stop playing so much video games and get bacc to his old weight of 220lbs, he would easily dominate anyone.
