Liddell vs. Couture IV shouldn't set up championship fight

After disappointing UFC 90 pay-per-view numbers, the UFC is clearly looking to suck as much as they can out of their two biggest draws, Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell:

Chuck Liddell is currently in negotiations to move to heavyweight in order to fight Randy Couture. The proposed fight would take place on June 13th in Cologne, Germany.

Liddell is known to walk around at 220 lbs., so a jump to heavyweight isn't out of the question for him. With three losses as a light heavyweight, he is out of the championship picture, but that wouldn't necessarily be so at heavyweight. Couture weighed 220 when he fought Brock Lesnar so the two fighters could negate any weight advantage. This fight is a fan's dream, and will help the UFC assert itself in the European market. That is all fine and good.

Ostensibly, the winner of this fight would get a chance at the belt in late 2009. This is where I have a problem. First, why would any up-and-coming heavyweight fighter -- Shane Carwin, Junior Dos Santos, Cain Velasquez -- want to train and push themselves up the ladder when they know that a title shot is out of the question until 2010? Secondly, Couture just lost the heavyweight belt. I wanted him to win as much as anybody, but he didn't, and now he should have to work his way back into title contention, just as Liddell would have to at 205.

The UFC is trying to sell a many pay-per-views as possible, and there is nothing wrong with that. What is wrong is pushing this fight into the championship picture when it doesn't belong there.
