Floyd Mayweather, Conor McGregor fuel speculation for a superfight

Just because a Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor superfight is highly unlikely doesn’t mean that the potential participants can’t have fun with the idea, right?

A rumor fueled by United Kingdom tabloid "The Sun" suggested that a potential fight between retired boxing kingpin Floyd Mayweather and UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor was close to being made. Although there was no truth to the rumor and UFC president Dana White quickly shot it down, both McGregor and Mayweather found an opportunity to toy with the fantasy matchup between two of the most entertaining and polarizing athletes in all of combat sports.

"It's possible. It was a name that was shot at me, but the rumors that y'all been hearing is the rumors that I started," Mayweather said in an interview with FightHype.com. "It may not be a rumor, keep y'all fingers crossed. It may be boxer vs. MMA fighter."

Mayweather hasn’t fought since defeating Andre Berto last September and has remained firm that he’s retired. However, it appears that he’s softening his stance a bit as the inquiries continue to roll in. Mayweather stated that if he were to fight again, it would have to earn him in excess of $100 million. Although the logistics of a fight with McGregor would be an absolute mess, it’s certainly something that has the general public talking.

As for McGregor, the Irish fighter quickly took to Instagram to post a photoshopped poster of the potential showdown. Although he’s not retired, we're sure the prideful MMA fighter wouldn’t mind the massive payday the mega matchup would generate.

McGregor’s coach, John Kavanagh, took to Twitter with his own lighthearted poke at the idea. “It’s really fine Mayweather we’re having here,” he tweeted with a picture while out in Rotterdam for a UFC Fight Night card where he was cornering McGregor’s training partner, Gunnar Nelson.

There may be a number of hurdles that makes this fight more of a dream than reality but it certainly is an interesting event for the world to fantasize over.
