Debunking Rashad Evans’ claims about Phil Davis’ wrestling

Ph12612CHICAGO -- Rashad Evans and Phil Davis both wrestled in the Big Ten in college, a fact that has been discussed several times over in the build-up to their UFC on Fox 2 bout on Saturday. Davis has questioned Evans' credentials, while Evans called Davis' technique trash.

During Thursday's press conference, Evans even went as far to call competition Davis faced during his tenure weak.

"You wrestled in a year that was kind of soft," Evans said. "Your technique is trash."

Unfortunately, the facts don't support Evans' claims.

Davis was a four-time All-American at Penn State, which means he placed in the top eight of the country in every year he wrestled. It's a difficult feat, no matter the competition. But the wrestlers Davis faced every year that he earned All-American status are names that are familiar to MMA fans.

Davis won the national title as a senior, beating three-time All-American Wynn Michalak from Central Michigan along the way. Max Askren, Ben's brother who won the title in 2010, also placed in the top eight that year.

In 2007, he shared the podium with the same man he shared the dais with today: UFC middleweight Chris Weidman, who beat future world team member J.D. Bergman on the way to a third-place finish. Davis lost in the finals in 2006 to Jake Rosholt, a UFC and WEC veteran and a three-time NCAA champion. When Davis took seventh his freshman year, he beat UFC light heavyweight Ryan Bader in the second round of the tournament.

Evans has talked about how he is better at MMA wrestling than Davis, and he'll get to test out that theory on Saturday. However, questioning his wrestling credentials is a waste of trash talk. A man with a national title, four All-Americans and two Big Ten titles has already proven himself on the mat.

Phil Davis should go out there and bodyslam Evans on his @#$% head and then punch Evans right in his fat mouth with some brutal GnP before he hopefully chokes Evans out or rips one of his limbs off. That'll teach Evans who's the boss when it comes to wrestling...

BJJ, Boxing, Judo, Karate, Muay Thai etc. are martial arts designed to FINISH the opponent, either by kick, strike, knee, slam, submission or broken arm. Watching two skilled boxers, Muy Thai fighters etc fight against each other is exciting because the fight can end in any moment, very violently.

Wrestlers on the other hand, NEVER FINISH, what they do is neutralize the each other, they can also neutralize any of the other martial arts, but they can never FINISH their opponents, that is why wrestling is so boring to watch.

That is why the Edson Barboza's wheel house KO gets 1,000,000 times more buzz and air time than all of GSP's lay-n-pray wins combined.

Sandman and the "truth". Not a combination that works well together. The fights this Saturday night in primetime are on FOX, not any "niche channel". FX has several Emmy winning original programs and is available on most basic cable packages. It also is not a "niche channel".Here's more truth...before the UFC, had anyone ever heard of SPIKE TV?Now, Fuel is a "niche channel" that they are showing the PRELIMS on. But Fuel will probably attain SPIKE status in the next 5-7 years...because of Zuffa content. There's some truth for you, #$%$

MMA is turning into wrestler's paradise

How many people in this forum watched or recorded the NCAA wrestling championships? ............thought so, that's exactly the same viewership the UFC will have if they full of these lay-n-pray wrestlers

Yeah, some of these non-wrestler MMA fighters should kick their #$%$

Jorge, it is ridiculous to label all wrestlers as lay and pray. Not only is it ridiculous, its flat out inaccurate. You need to learn more about the art to appreciate it. Try going to some wrestling classes and you'll have a better understanding of the intricacies involved.

Whether I appreciate it or not, the bottom line is that NOBODY watches wrestling because it so friggin boring to watch, what was the viewership rating for the NCAA wrestling championships??? are they even televised nationally in prime time?

At least Rashad and Hendo are wrestlers who learned a respectable boxing/stand up game. But most of these wrestlers turned UFC fighters. It is embarrassing to see them even try to throw punches. Nothing like seeing a 'professional fighter' ducking his head, closing his eyes, and doing his best Nolan Ryan imitation. Comical.

THIS IS THE POINT THAT WE HAVE BEEN MAKING FOR YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The pure BJJ guys, like Maia, have PATHETIC STAND UP. And the MAJORITY of rasslers have HORRID STAND UP.

I'm not dissing MMA as a comparison to Boxing--which I know is your shtick. My critique is that the rasslers with no stand-up skills ARE NOT Mixed Martial Artists!!!!!! We both agree on this, have for years. These "thumbs down" dolts just don't get the very concept of "mixed" martial arts. Having one technique is not MMA.
      • JimboJones 3 months ago
Mixed martial arts is about combining people from different backgrounds to see who is the most effective. Some lack skills, but have other skills. If a fighter has one skill and is still good enough to beat everyone with just that one skill, then all the power to him. Its about effective fighting, not some lofty concept you have created in your head.

MMA fighters have to divide up their time in training. Why would or should some one like Maia or Phil Davis try to become great stand up fighters? They are extremely dominate in their area; so why devote all their energy to an area they will never be the best at? Maia isn't ever going to beat Silva in a stand up fight and to try to do so makes no rational sense.

Rashad is the man. Best LHW fighter in the division in my opinion. Yea, I think he cant beaet Jones. The key word is "think" though until they actually fight which I cannot wait for.

Dana should keep these wrestlers away from the top or he will lose a huge audience. Most mainstream people want to see striking, not lay-n-pray
    • OGNutcracker  •  3 months ago
If Dana were smart (big IF) he would put guys on Fox who are caution to the wind bangers. People, especially the mainstream and broader audience don't give two sh$ts about the intricacies of wrestling or BJJ. And they are never gonna be. Put in guys who like to bang and watch the ratings get respectable. Until then, enjoy pulling barely over a million viewers on some niche Fox channel.

        True again!

Fools can dis on OGNUT all day, but he speaks the truth, has a fighting I.Q., actually knows MMA despite his rhetoric, etc.......

So, give us some thumbs down. It just confirms the truth!

Ya but you won't this to be a sport not simply cage fighting. The long term success of the sport depends on people appreciating all aspects of it. People don't just watch Football for the hits or NASCAR for the crashes.

It's pretty clear now that Evans knew what he was talking about when he said his wrestling was better than Davis'. Maybe not in a pure wrestling match but when you add punches to a wrestling match it can make even the best wrestlers look like amateurs.
    • OGNutcracker  •  3 months ago
Another boring one dimensional wrestler that started to learn boxing way too late in life. So what do they do?? Ankle grabbers. The UFC is full of them. No wonder the UFC on FX1 is pulling down a paltry 1.3 million viewers. This sport is broken and can't get up. Boring wrestlers like Davis, Sonnen, etc etc won't help. Mainstream doesn't watch the NCAA's on cable at 3am..

Actually, the NCAA championships have been airing live on ESPN at 8pm for several years.

Please enough with the college wrestling.
Beating 18-19 yr old pimply kids barely out of high school IS NOT a world class wrestler.
Dan Cormier, Joe Warren and a few others i dont mind hearing about (Lawal did compete one year internationaaly) but these college guys.
      Enough!!!

You know that the majority of NCAA wrestlers are not straight out of high school don't you? Do you even know how the NCAA works? You get four years of eligibility and keep them until a certain age. I'm been in the Army for three years and I could go back to college and wrestle for four. Yeah, it's rare to see a freshman at the NCAA Finals.

        Ignorance- You're doing it right.
