Last November Daniel Straus managed to overcome a good deal of personal adversity and dominated Pat Curran to avenge a loss from four years prior and secure the Bellator featherweight championship. Straus' reward for beating Curran?
He'll have to do it again in an immediate rematch March 14 in front of a home-town crowd for Curran. Bellator has announced that the two will face-off for a third time March 14 in Hammond, IN in an event to be aired on Spike TV.
The fight will no doubt be a solid one but it is still a bit strange because of how definitively yet unspectacularly Straus won their last fight. For the wide majority of fans that had not seen their first meeting in the regional XFO event in 2009 when Curran knocked Straus out, they will see the former champion get a rematch that he does not really appear to have earned.
Straus really shut down Curran in their last fight, earning a unanimous decision. Instead of giving the new champion a chance to beat the next challenger and force the former champ to work his way back to a shot, Curran gets a quick rematch where he'll have the home-crowd advantage.
We suppose another way of looking at this would be that Straus gets to fight a bigger name that he has also proven he can beat instead of having to fight a tough unknown. So, if Straus can win again, his star will rise even more and hopefully look to other title-defense opportunities in the near future.
The benefits for Curran are obvious. He can prove he had a bad night the last time out and get his belt back with a quickness, should he be able to figure out Strauss' number once more.
