Dana White calls out Internet hackers, they respond by releasing his alleged personal info

A fired up Dana White at Chicago press conferenceCHICAGO -- The war is on between the UFC and Internet hackers.

On Sunday, UFC.com was re-routed several times to the website UGnazi. The site's organizers, who White called terrorists several times during the "UFC on Fox 2" press conference, said the hacking of UFC.com is a result of the company's support of SOPA and PIPA. The wide-ranging bills are aimed at stopping online piracy.

White lashed out at the hackers.

Update: White dug in deeper during a conversation with The Score's Mauro Ranallo (13:30 mark).

"Keep hacking our site, do it again. Do it tonight," said White. "These guys look like terrorists now and a bill that was about to die, is about to come back."

The hacker taking credit for the UFC hit, @joshthgod, went a different route after the challenge, posting White's personal info, including a Social Security number, a list of residential addresses, a vehicle identification number and a personal phone number.

That followed a tweet that said White is now the target.

"@danawhite We don't want your site anymore. We are going after YOU! Follow me for tonights exciting events! #ufc #sopa #acta #pipa,"

White said the hackers are only hurting their own cause by alerting politicians that there's a serious issue. He's willing to risk his own safety to stop the online pilfering.

"Is SOPA the perfect bill? No, it's not. The only thing that we're focused on is piracy. Piracy is stealing. If you walk into a store and you steal a gold watch, it's the same as stealing a pay-per-view. I don't care what your twisted, demented idea of stealing is," White said. "These kids who grew up on the Internet never had to pay for anything, so they don't think that you should have to."

White closed by saying he's not afraid of the Internet, it's where cowards live.

Everything this hacker did is already illegal. What would SOPA/PIPA do to keep this from happening? Nothing. Illegal is already illegal. Basically, the government is trying to pass a bill that goes beyond this to give them more power. That is all this bill is about.

The new law wont stop hackers. The only thing it does is give the govt the right to censor the internet.
      • Greaseman 3 months ago
Spot on. I think the proponents of these bills should get as educated about online piracy and why censoring the internet won't solve the problem, all it does is make the internet unusable.

I personally do not support SOPA/PIPA but yours is a straw man argument. White defends the bill because he doesn't want his PPV's stolen. That has little or nothing to do with what the the hacker did.

$50 a PPV for Americans.......free for people in Europe, South America, Mexico, and Brazil. They get to watch the same event you paid $50 for, on ESPN. Yet he claims we can't do that here in the US. Who's the theif now Dana. I love MMA, but I have not purchased an event from you since you jacked it up over $25. Even then I hated the idea of paying ticket price to watch a show on TV. It used to be there was a card every 2 or 3 months, now there are 2 a month at $50 a pop?

Then you say you support SOPA, and all you are concered with is Piracy. Well SOPA and PIPA extend beyond piracy. So instead of blindly supporting something because of one issue, maybe he should look into what else is in there. Perhaps then he would not support it so much. Right now he has tunnel vision and wants a short term solution.

The people like Dana White and the RIAA who want SOPA are just as bad, if not more evil, than these hackers. Furthermore, hacking has nothing to do with stopping on-line piracy - which has not been proven to hurt sales in any significant way. It sounds like profits are as sky high as their greed. This type of legislation only promotes censorship and ends up destroying a free and open web.

For the record I am against on-line piracy, but the way to deal with it is to take the offenders to court, and push for better control/laws in other offending countries. Accountability folks, not giving companies the free will to take down any site it sees fit.

Is there something wrong with profits being sky high? As if it's any different than hackers taking down a site huh.

I'm all for piracy, but stating piracy doesn't hurt sales is just an ignorant statement and makes you look retarded.
      • paul 3 months ago
equating piracy with "not been proven to hurt sales" is, in itself an oxymoron. property (intellectual and physical) is not free the last i heard. as far as the hacker-i hope his/her mom changes the sheets after he/she wets the bed.

Dana should stick to what he knows best, promote fights. Picking up a fight with hackers is a fight you will never win, Dana!

No such thing as a fight with a hacker, them cowards wouldn't be able to fight their way out of a wet paper bad.

Oh my God, so many people just do NOT understand.

1.) Most people who are "stealing" PPV were not going to pay for it in the first place, so there is no "loss" in that case.

2.) Using the argument that "stealing is still stealing and MMA is losing money" is false because stealing a non-tangible good does not decrease the producer's supply.

"Losing" a PPV viewing to "theft" does not decrease the producer's profits in any way if there was never any intent to purchase in the first place. That is like saying the Boston Red Sox lose money for every bird that flies over the park and gets a free glimpse at the game.

Pirating is still stealing, but the point made here is that it doesn't affect the victims nearly as much as they milk it for.

UFC 141 made $3,100,000......at the gate. This is just from the live event people. That means if Dana does 12 live events per year(he does more), at 3 million per event his company would bring in $36 million+. This doesn't include pay per views, advertising revenues, or merchandising. The UFC has video games, t-shirts, etc. You also have to factor in that MMA is growing internationally, and Dana is constantly looking to set up new venues in foreign countries. He needs to de-emphasize PPV and focus on large events where he can pack stadiums with 30,000+ people(like he did in Canada). THAT is how he defeats these hackers, because you can't pirate live events, you either have the ticket or you don't.Even with "online piracy" Dana White is still making profit. Online Piracy is overrated. Mission Impossible 4 made 500 million plus in an age where anyone who wants can download it for free offline. If Tom Cruise can still bring in 500 mill in an age of rampant piracy then SOPA, PIPA and all these laws are just #$%$ If your product is good people will pay. If some of them pirate it, who cares? What really matters is whether your make a profit, and Dana White is.

Try to stop it! It is impossible unless all the nations are on board.

You cannot prosecute a kid in the former USSR.

The thing these people don't understand is they aren't losing any money. The people that download things for free or watch these fights for free and such would't pay for these services. They may end up getting extras and buying merchandise and such, like t-shirts and such but they would'nt buy the service anyways. The only reason they use the software or watch or use the service is that it is available.

Dana White is stupid. This hacker has nothing to with either of those bills. He did this on his own accord and neither of them will prevent him or others from doing it again.

Dana White, keep challenging people 100x more intelligent than yourself. This is not a winning proposition for you. SOPA/PIPA is the Internet equivalent of the Patriot Act. It destroys everything the USA stands for!

the tough guy routine isn't going to work Dana.
    • Mark  •  3 months ago
he's like the stereotypical dumb jock. and what kind of piracy is the UFC suffering from? The people who would find/view an illegal stream of a UFC match wouldn't pay to watch it in the first place.

that's the problem, these media companies don't seem to understand that people don't pay to see their crap because, well, it's crap that isn't worth paying for. stop having accountants make your creative decisions, and maybe people would be willing to pay for it.

sure, make it impossible to pirate/rip movies/music and you won't see any additional revenues until you make something worth buying.

It never ceases to amaze me how much the government hates those who (steal) from them. The percentage of these so called piraters, or hackers. Is so low.... That its not even 1% of the population. And there already having an uproar about it. This just seems like an excuse to control the internet more is all.

Mr. White's freedom of speech...his right to his opinion...even if he doesn't know what the real issues are. Bullies think they know all including intimidating anyone...i'm always online, not hiding, not a coward. Mr. White dont scare people with your mouth.

I remember when rich people where concerned about people stealing the money they already have. Now they have moved to whining about people stealing money they could "theoritically" have. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE 1%?
    • BlazerDawg  •  Beaverton, Oregon  •  3 months ago
Dana White is a #$%$ SOPA and PIPA will do nothing to hackers. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! So keep talking #$%$ Dana, all you are doing is alienating potentially new fans by being a dip#$%$.

I don't watch UFC as much as I used to anymore, especially since it is $50 a pop. Back when I was still stationed overseas it was free. I just don't see the justification of spending $50 (which lasts a couple hours of entertainment) on something I could easily buy for less than 20 (depending on how long I wait), and I could watch it on repeat if I wanted to. Personally I can't stand Dana and his false sense of Badassery. But who cares, if I ever want to catch a UFC event, I'll just go to a bar where its free. Hell if I really wanted to I'd just host a party and have all my friends chip in for it. Piracy? I think not. It just makes sense. Plenty of other things I'd do with $50, just saying.
