"I think I'm better than Anderson and I think Demian's better than Anderson," Sonnen told me on Wednesday. "I think we would both beat him."
Go ahead, step away from your computer to stop laughing for a second. Sonnen, who hasn't fought in the UFC since 2006, and when he did, he lost to Jeremy Horn, is better than Anderson Silva in Sonnen's mind. Seriously, stop laughing.
There is no question that Sonnen has improved a great deal since that that fight in '06, but he was hardly an overwhelming force in every fight. He wasn't even the best fighter in the WEC, so to think of him being better than Anderson Silva, a fighter who is tied atop Yahoo! Sports' pound-for-pound rankings, is laughable.
The good news is that Sonnen will have to prove himself very shortly. His takedown defense will have to be at its best with Maia, as he will submit Sonnen if the fight is taken to the ground. If Sonnen stays on his feet, we will get to see if Maia's game has grown.
Anderson Silva will probably be watching, but for some reason, I don't think he will be worried about either competitor.
