Wrong guy: Chicago paper identifies Joaquin Benoit as Matt Garza

Nothing says "Welcome to Chicago!" after a big trade like having your mug splashed on the front page of the sports section of one of the town's big newspapers.

Only, newspapers everywhere aren't what they used to be, as new Chicago Cubs right-hander Matt Garza(notes) is finding out. When the Chicago Sun-Times reported the news of Garza's arrival Saturday morning, "The Bright One" used a picture of another person who pitched for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2010, Joaquin Benoit(notes).

D'oh!

Dave Wills, one of the Rays' broadcasters and a native of Chicago, noticed the boo-boo and informed the St. Petersburg Times, who blew the whistle. The online version of the Sun-Times story — at least the one I read — had Garza's actual photo accompanying it.

Anyway, it's more important that the Cubs can tell Matt Garza from Joaquin Benoit, who recently signed a contract, via free agency, with the Detroit Tigers.

I'm sure general manager Jim Hendry did his due diligence and got the right guy. Although, there is a resemblance — in facial hair — between Garza and former Cubs right-hander Matt Clement. Ah, it'll all be sorted out in spring training.
