Want to help Mark Buehrle fight Miami’s pitbull ban? Sign this online petition

When it comes to offseason baseball stories on Big League Stew, few have generated the type of interest and reaction that the plight of Mark Buehrle and his family pitbull has produced.

As you'll recall, Slater Buehrle and his owners were forced to choose a residence somewhere outside of Miami-Dade County when Mark signed a four-year, $58 million deal with the Miami Marlins in December. The 18-month-old dog is an American Staffordshire terrier, a breed that falls under a pitbull ban the county began in 1989.

Fast forward a few weeks: Though Mark and Jamie Buehrle have found a home in Broward County for their two children and four dogs, they're still engaging in the animal activism that made Mark such a popular pitcher with the Chicago White Sox. Not only did they film the 30-second commercial embedded above, but they've launched a change.org petition to rally support for legislation that would end the ban.

    Writes Jamie Buehrle:

It is time to put an end, once and for all, to canine discrimination in Florida and make the Sunshine State a model of humane public policy. Please join me, Mark and our family in standing up for Slater and the dogs [in] Miami-Dade. Help save lives and keep families together by supporting the legislation that will repeal Miami's inhumane breed-discriminatory law.

The Buehrles are looking for a total of 7,500 signatures and have collected almost 5,500 at the time of this posting. Judging from the response our first post about Slater got, it doesn't seem like they'll have much of a problem reaching that goal.

Let's ban cars because people get killed by them! Please!
People who have dogs need to be held accountable for the actions of said dog, no matter what the breed. It's always the owners fault, anytime their dog is out of bounds.

I would love to help Mark Buehrle make Miami the pit-bull capital of the world. please take all of them out of my neighborhood, where the poor things are paraded around by kids from the suburbs who fancy themselves gangstas., "Hey look at me and my dog- recognize, fools!"

was just wondering, Are the bully breeds allowed at akc dog shows?

I've got an idea....how about a law where people can own Pit Bulls, but if their dog kills another animal or person, that animal or person's family gets to kill the Pit Bull owner. Sign that petition. F Pit Bulls.

completely agree. too many pit bull apologists out there. if you love dogs so much, than why not get a different breed?
      • Meagan 3 months ago
because there is nothing wrong with Pit Bulls, just some of the people that own them. I have 3 big, beautiful, loving Pit Bulls, a Bichon Frise, and a Pug. I love ALL dogs. I train ALL dogs, and unfortunately I have to deal with ALL people, even if they are as ignorant as you two.
      • E-Dub 3 months ago
So....when a Pit Bull kills or injures a person or an animal, what do you propose the solution should be, Meagan? And don't say "punish the owner," because by then, it's too late.

Amazing how stupid the comments are here....I have never owned a pit bull, but as part of my work environment, I have been around about 100 of them thru the years. Almost every one was friendly, relatively intelligent, and acted like one of the family. Now...just because they are muscular and strong, doesn't mean they are as harmless as a toy poodle...but if you abuse the dog or raise it aggressive, then that is the outcome. The reputation of this dog breed is FULLY a result of the JERKS that raised the dogs improperly, and THAT is who should be the target of any laws. If I didn't already have a Labrador and a Shepard, I would gladly adopt a pit bull based on me experiences. Good luck to Mark and Jamie on this.....its discrimination against the dog and favors the FOOLS who raise them wrong.
      • Mark 3 months ago
How does this favor the fools who raise them wrong? For the life of me, I can't figure out what you mean by that statement. But anyway, in my line of work I have encountered many more than you claim with the vast majority being aggressive and unfit for anything other than protecting a stash. I agree it is the result of the owners for the most part but you can't allow these things in neighborhoods and jeopardize the children while you figure out what to do with the thugs. Once you solve that issue, let them back in. Just don't hold your breath because it isn't going to happen, unfortunately.

After reading through and responding to many of these comments I noticed how few of you actually live in Miami, and yet your opinions are so loud regarding legislation that doesn't directly affect you? There are very few educated posts on here regarding pitbull behavior. Most of you nay-sayers quote some unknown source regarding maulings and fatalities. (for those of you nay-sayers please take a moment and google the term "nanny dog")

The truth of the matter is that this ban is nearly unenforcable as is and far to vague. For those of you how want to keep pitbulls banned, feel free to write legislation in your county, but stay out of the legislation in mine. I want to have the liberty of freedom, including owning the type of dog I want to own, and I take FULL responsibility for my animals actions. Pitbulls are blamed for the original breeding purpose over 200 years ago. What about evolution people? We as humans have evolved in the last 200 years, are we still held accountable for our ancestors 200 years back? What about nature vs nurture? For those who argue that Miami is full of incompetant human beings incapable of raising a pitbull, than perhaps focus your energies more on the dog fight bans. As of this moment, my tax dollars are being spent ripping pets away from their families based on their physical characteristics and euthanizing them, when they could better be spent placing the animals into better homes or fighting animal cruelty. I moved to Miami for a job, it was not my choice to move here, but it is my choice as to whom or what I make as my pet. I back mark 100% and have personally written and urged friends and family to write every house of represenatives memeber and senate member in the state of florida to say yes to HB0997 and overturn breed speciffic legislation.

pit bulls must have some use somewhere...but for me, i just hope that place is as far away as possible, and miami is only, what, 1100 miles from here...nope, got no use for pitbulls anytime, anyplace, anyhow...
      • TardKiller 3 months ago
Gee, but they said such nice things about you, 'tard. Show me a bad dog and I'll show you a bad master, every time.
      • Alan 3 months ago
see...i said not one word about whether the buerhle's should like or own pitbulls...but then i also gave indication at least that i understand about some people's dislike or other negative responses to pitbulls, including such public things as the ban on those dogs down there in that florida community...point is, those people down there have every right to do what they've done, just as pitbull owners and lovers have the same right to try to overturn that law...bottom line, though, these opposing 'rights' are legitimate and neither can rule out the other except in the vote...now me, i just chimed in because the article apparently was by someone who likes pitbulls, and probably mark buerhle, etc...and tried to drum up support out here for getting that law changed...me, i wouldn't want it changed, and just wanted to let everyone know that i oppose the 'movement', don't support it...

nothing wrong there, mr. tardkiller...but what is wrong is that you apparently don't like the idea of americans being free to say what they want to say...oh, and the bad dog/bad master thing, well, really, it doesn't take a 'bad dog' to bite or attack someone...and in fact, it happens quite a lot that a 'good dog' with a good master does bite/attack...and then you hear, "but i don't understand! fido never bit anyone before. he loves people. blah blah blah..."

"canine discrimination"...ROFL!!! I suppose it has nothing to do with all of the dumbasses in the major cities using these animals for purposes other than a family pet. The real problem isn't the dogs themselves but since we as humans rarely admit our responsiblities in issues such as this...good luck. As for the Beuhrles...attack the root of the problem you knuckleheads.

If Buehrle's quest to reverse the ban on Pit Bulls is successful he should be personally responsible for any child, adult, other dog, other animal, emergency worker that gets mauled or killed. I bet he wouldn't mind paying for a childs funeral if it means he can live with his dogs in Miami/ Dade County. That childs parents might mind though.
    • Fresco22  •  3 months ago
No, I will not. The Pitbull law is implemented to protect and prevent thugs from performing illegal Pitbull fights. It's a multi-billion dollar industry all over the U.S annually. DON'T SIGN THIS. If the law is overturned, many pitbulls will be subject to mistreatment and die due to severe fights. Mark Buehrle can drive down to miami. HE HAS THE MONEY.

The law has been there for 23 years for a reason. South Floridians got tired of Pit Bull's jumping over fences and tearing off the limbs and faces of their next door neighbors. South Floridians got tired of babies being killed by their family's pet Pit. South Floridians got tired of clueless Pit Bull owners uttering statements like "I can't believe it! He never did anything like that before!"

This is not discrimination, this is some common sense after years of listening to apologists defend their own Pit Bulls.

We get it. There are other bad dogs. And we get it. Not all Pit Bulls do bad things. But you have to have the world's largest set of blinders on to ignore the overwhelming evidence regarding damage done by Pit Bulls in unprovoked attacks.

Pit Bulls and Rottweilers amount to only 2% to 3% of America's dogs, yet almost 70% of dog-related deaths. That is stunning. I say keep Pit Bulls banned, and while you are at it, you need to ban Rottweilers too!!

I feel sorry for all the uneducated people regarding pit bulls. We have 3 and they are the most gentile of dogs. Owners are what make the dogs aggressive, it is not the breed. Let's band
people from turning a gentile dog into a nightmare!

The pit bull is a strain of animal that does not need to exist. I live in Florida and I love that law. I respect Mark's feelings, but perhaps he should have played or moved some where else.

If I lived in Miami, I would rather petition to get a decade of my taxes back from padding the pockets of Jeff Loria's gold laden pants.
