Even Major League Baseball players try their hand at the lottery looking for a quick sum of cash. In fact, for Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Wade Miley, it might even qualify as a part of his routine or even a hobby.
According to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com, every Sunday Miley and mental skills coach Peter Crone will set aside time to scratch off lottery tickets in the clubhouse. Of course this is well known among Miley's teammates, and that makes them very dangerous. Any time they sense a weakness, it's an automatic opening for a prank, and they took full advantage of their opportunity.
Earlier this year, Crone was talking with D-backs reliever J.J. Putz, and the pair discussed what it would be like if they could pull a prank on Miley by convincing him that he actually won.
"Peter and I were talking one day and decided, 'Hmmm, that might be kind of funny,'" Putz said.
Fellow reliever Will Harris picked up a fake lottery ticket from Spencer's and they mixed it in with the real ones last Sunday.
"I thought I won $10,000," Miley said.
As you can see in the video, Miley's reaction was legit. Then it looks like he starts studying the scratch off ticket pretty hard to make sure his lucky day had finally arrived. His teammates let him have a few moments to let it all soak in, and then they hit him with the reality.
As he jumped around high-fiving his teammates in the trainer's room, Crone brought him back down to earth.
"You know there's a lot of people in here right now for no reason," Crone told him.
It was then Miley realized he had been pranked. To make matters worse, the team sent the video to MLB Network's Intentional Talk, and it aired this past week.
"They set me up," Miley said. "The whole world knows now."
That's a pretty solid prank.
Of course I wouldn't encourage trying the same with your co-workers, but that's the type that go over very well in big league clubhouses. Miley was a good sport about it too, as he should be. And besides that, I don't think he'll need the $10,000 now or anytime soon. With a 3.57 ERA in 64 big appearances, he seems well on his way to solid big league career.
