Video: Gary Carter hits RBI double in final career at-bat

Earlier on Thursday, baseball learned that Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter had died, after having brain cancer, at age 57. In September 1992, Carter ended his major-league career on a happy note, hitting a go-ahead double at Olympic Stadium to help the Montreal Expos beat the Chicago Cubs.

Note in the video that the ball barely makes it over the outstretched glove of Carter's former teammate in Montreal, Andre Dawson.

It was a near-perfect way to end his career, as if the Montreal crowd willed the ball to fall in. For as much as Carter left a legacy with the New York Mets, everything started for him in Montreal. In the aftermath of Carter's death, the video clip probably has made many a baseball fan teary, even if they weren't particularly partial to Les Expos. The moment for those watching on TV, or now on video replay, was enhanced because Cubs broadcaster Harry Caray made a great call.

Pitchers and catchers report soon, so don't miss a beat ...

I was fortunate to have played with Gary in the Penn league. Even as a young man he was a true gentleman and loved the game so much. He will be missed by many and may his spirit live on the hearts and memories of his family, friends and fans... RIP my friend.

I didn't watch that game live but I certainly remember watching the TV highlights that night. What a great way to end a brilliant career - getting the game winning hit in front of your home fans, who in turn give a well deserved standing ovation.

Thanks for all the great memories # 8! RIP.

Goodbye, Gary. As a Red Sox fan, it was hard to admit you were one of my favorite players in 1986, but it was true. Class act, great player, certified Hall of Famer. Only Puckett, Ripken and you come to mind when you name great players who were universally admired.

What professional athletes should be, a decent family man, who did not do drugs or commit adultery, get DUIs, say shocking things, enthused and happy about his game, unabashed and not embarrassed to be happy to be playing, and happy in his beliefs, and happy about his life and family. My heart catches at this loss. We need his type.

For any Canadian baseball fan that loves the great game of baseball it was a priviledge to have Gary Carter play for the Montreal Expos for as long as he did.......I know anybody that loves baseball would have loved Gary Carter as much as I did. I followed his career and was very heartbroken when he left Montreal.......easily one of my all time fave players! RIP Gary....your exuberance and committment was immeasurable.........

NNady, let's get this straight, all of Canada loved the Expos not just the city or the province.....I am from Vancouver and can remember watching Rusty Staubs and Spaceman Lee way back in the very early days.....a lot of great players played in Montreal and I loved watching them play......Carter, The Hawk, The Big Cat Galarraga, Pedro Martinez, Dennis Martinez, Larry Walker, Steve Rogers, Vladdy, Tim Raines, Wallach, Reardon, Parrish, Cromartie the list goes on and I can even remember them playing at little Jarry Park what an intimate ball park that was to play ball in.........no greater Expo than the HOF Gary Carter though.......always my fave foresure......
