U.S. Cellular Field: Home of the Chicago Cubs?

Could the Cubs call the South Side home for a year? (Getty)

It's the question that bubbles up whenever the Chicago Cubs talk about taking the scalpel to Wrigley Field and putting it through the extensive renovation it desperately needs: Just where would the team play if the construction work required shutting the Friendly Confines down for a season?

For all the silly talk about making Cubs fans drive 90 miles north to Milwaukee's Miller Park, there's really only one logical option, of course. That would be U.S. Cellular Field, home of the crosstown rival Chicago White Sox and located about a brisk eight-mile jog from the corner of Clark and Addison. There are even some local rumbles that the Cubs are considering taking up residence at The Cell for the 2013 season, though team officials are currently denying that arrangement.

[ Fantasy baseball: Five draft habits of lousy owners | Sign up and play ]

    From NBC Chicago:

Workers at U.S. Cellular tell a different story (than the Cubs' denial). They say they  are being warned of a much busier 2013 season (as in, prepare for double the games). (South Side) bar owners tell a similar story.

Again, the Cubs say they haven't thought that far ahead and that they are working on a plan to secure funds to renovate the stadium ahead of the 99th season there.

There are any number of issues the Cubs have to work through before they even think about subletting somewhere, namely securing some public funding for this work.

U.S. Cellular Field (Getty)But as Neil deMause of Field of Schemes speculates, the surfacing of this story could be the Cubs way of floating a "trial balloon" to see how their fans regard the idea of trucking it south for an entire season. I suspect the more practical members of the Cubs' fanbase wouldn't see a problem with taking up residence at U.S. Cellular for a year, especially if it meant returning to retro-fitted comforts of Wrigley the following season. There's also a precedent of such a move working: The Yankees played two seasons at Shea Stadium when old Yankee Stadium was being renovated over 1974 and 1975.

The Cubs' fanbase, however, has never been particularly noted for its reasoning skills. Half of the Lincoln Park chad-trixie contingent operates under the (untrue) belief they'll be shot the minute they step off the train at 35th Street while another segment would rather travel to another state for a game than a different neighborhood in the city.* With the Cubs lately drawing a large segment of their attendance from the summer tourist crowd/Iowa tour bus caravan, I'm guessing their totals would crater if Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer don't have a winning product on the field by then.

*You probably only understand this paragraph if you live here, folks. And for the rest of you Stewies: No, it does not make any sense at all.

Of course, there's also the issue of whether or not South Siders would be down with welcoming Cubs fans to their turf for an entire summer.

And to answer that question, a trial balloon won't be necessary at all.

    (No, they would not.)

I would laugh if the Cubs won the WS at US Cellular. It'd certainly explain where the curse comes from.

I am a sox fan and would love it if they won at the cell lol it would taint the cubs victory.

The last time the Cubs won the World Series, 1908, the Cubs played their home games at the White Sox ballpark. At the time the Cubs played at the West Side ballpark (currently the Eisenhower Expressway runs thru the location) and their ballpark was deemed to small to handle a WS crowd.

Whether Cub fans go to Miller Park or the Cell , they will find out how much better the
food is in both of those venues , and how much they have been getting ripped off by
the owners of the Cubs who serve up the worst junk food in MLB.

people don't go to Wrigley for the food dude...fans go there for the beer

And the broads, but definitely NOT the baseball.

I think they can divide up their games at US Cellular, Brewer's field, Northwestern's field and even some games where they have spring training. But a previous writer had it right, the Venders around Wrigley field will suffer big time so they will have to be compensated.
      • Mike 18 days ago
The venders around Wrigley Field would have no legal right to compensation. The Cubs don't "owe" them anything.

I've been to both ballparks and Wrigley is a dump. I sat in a skybox there last year and couldn't believe how that park still stands. Netting all over the place to catch falling concrete, rusted out structural steel, cracked ramps to seating...the list could go on forever. They need a major overhaul at Wrigley and if they need to play on the South Side for a season, I say do it.

        I agree

If Cubs played at the "Cell", I bet they still draw more than the Sox....that would be hilarious!

but the Cubs would still be the laughingstock of pro sports, that IS hilarious

Well the Cubbies could have yet another attendance trophy to put in their case. I'll take the Sox World Series trophy any day.

When's the last time the Cubs won the WS and when's that last time the Sox won. Enough said.

To the fellow who repeated old news that the Cubs haven't won a pennant since 1945--sorry, but 10 pennants won count just as much before '45 as after.

"Half of the Lincoln Park chad-trixie contingent operates under the (untrue) belief they'll be shot the minute they step off the train at 35th Street"

Not true at all. Maybe a severe beat down, but not shot.

Probably cheaper to renovate than to build a while new stadium.
    • GS  •  3 months ago
Lets face it either the Chubbies relocate for 2 seasons and demolish that rat trap the so lovingly call the freindly confines (whats so lovely about a place that's falling down) and build a NEW stadium and leave the frickin ivy in the compost pile to be trucked to the dump. Or have it literally fall down around their ears.

LOL...yeah we'll let them come out South. It's gonna cost double thou.

Jim the guy is from Ohio. This is nothing new at all. This has been talked about for years as the renovation of Wrigley has been planned. White Sox fans might not like the idea, but I imagine Reisndorpf is drooling think about all the money coming in
    • Max Zorin  •  3 months ago
All of the people who own business's around Wrigley would go bankrupt. The neighborhood needs Wrigley more than the Cubs do.
    • Fact Giver  •  3 months ago
I know dozens of Sox fans from the North Side and dozens of Cubs fans on the South Side. There is no magical border. Cubs fans make the journey every year to the Cell. It's not a big deal. I hope they play there. The Cell is a better baseball park. No obstructed views, plenty of bathrooms, nice concourse. I love going there for games. As for nightlife, well, it's obvious Wrigleyville area no question. Wrigley: Keep the Ivy, Scoreboard. Gut the rest.

Cardinals fan here...and I would be happy to see the Cubs win it all some year. They've won more pennants than the Reds, Pirates, Braves, and Phillies, so why not?
    • Freeman4AR  •  Chicago, Illinois  •  3 months ago
OK--Cubs 10 NL pennants is tied for 4th with the Braves.
      Dodgers--19; Giants--19; Cardinals--18; Cubs--10; Braves--10
    • Freeman4AR  •  Chicago, Illinois  •  3 months ago
In other words, their 10 pennants is 4th all-time in the National League.

Hearing that annoying Cubs song (Go Cubs Go) being played at the Cell would almost be too much to handle for me. Watching the Cubs take the field as a visiting team is one thing, but announcing the Cubs starting lineup as the home team would be another (especially during the crosstown classic).
    • Gretzky's Mullet  •  San Francisco, California  •  3 months ago
Couldn't they split home dates between the Cell and Miller? It isn't like a team's never done such a thing before, heck the Green Bay Packers played some of their games in Milwaukee for 60 odd years.
Alternately, as has been suggested, what about Soldier Field? The two seasons only overlap for a month (sorry Cubs fans, but we know you're not going to be still playing in October). Soldier is plenty accessible for fans and definitely has the capacity, and I'm sure the City of Chicago (which owns it), would like nothing more than an additional 81 events planned there.
If anything, Reinsdorf should be pushing like crazy for the Cubs to rent out his digs for a year, before someone else gets in on that first. I'm sure the businesses around Armour Square would love him for it.
Or they could just barnstorm for the year...

With the team they're going to put on the field they should play in one of their minor league stadiums because thats the caliber of play they are going to get. The Sox won't be much better. One reason the Bears had to play in Champaign was because the the pansies in Evanston didn't want to let them play in Dyche Stadium.
