The beer line at Minnesota Twins games just got a lot more interesting.
Target Field has introduced a first of its kind self-serve beer station, which charges by the ounce and offers four brew varieties for patrons to choose from. It's like a soda fountain mixed with the self-checkout line at the super market. What could go wrong?
The first self-serve beer station — they're called DraftServs and they were created by Delaware North concession service and beer giant Anheuser-Busch— debuted at Sunday's Yankees-Twins game. A second one will be installed in time for next week's MLB All-Star game.
No other MLB stadium has one of these, so the Brewers and the people at the Cardinals' Busch Stadium must be like "what the heck, man? Have we not proven ourselves to be worthy ambassadors of beer?"
You obviously have questions about how futuristic beer station this will work, and the Minneapolis Star Tribune has answers:
A patron goes to a concession cashier, shows proper identification to verify age and buys a vending card with either $10 or $20 on it for use at the station. There will be $50 cards available for the All-Star Game.
There are four beers to choose from, and they can be bought by the ounce: Bud and Bud Light (38 cents per ounce), and Shock Top Lemon Shandy and Goose Island 312 Urban Pale Ale (40 cents per ounce).
Customers can withdraw up to 48 ounces every 15 minutes. If that sounds like a lot, there is an employee at each machine to not only check identification but also to intercede should a patron appear intoxicated.
Ha! "Should a patron appear intoxicated." Naw, that would never, ever, ever, ever happen at a self-serve beer station where someone can get 48 ounces every 15 minutes. Human beings always have proven themselves to be responsible and well aware of their own personal limits.
